  Intro to Stained Glass Art $160.00 This 5-week class will introduce the tools and techniques of stained glass construction. Students will learn the Tiffany method, (the copper foil method), to create one or more projects that showcase the beauty of stained glass. Designs can be supplied, or students may wish to consult with the instructor about creating their own. Students who have no experience with stained glass are welcome, as well as students who have experience but wish to build upon that foundation. All supplies and materials for this class are included with registration. This class is open to those age 14 and older. Session 1: Wednesdays, March 25-April 22, 6-8 p.m. Session 2: Wednesdays, April 29-May 27, 6-8 p.m. Cost: $160 (price includes all supplies) (PAC members receive 20% discount).

In False Promises, the fight for Black voting rights in Ohio comes alive through narratives of men of color who defied the state’s nineteenth-century restrictions on suffrage. Though ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment ostensibly extended the franchise, state election laws still forced men of color into a perilous struggle for full citizenship. Ric S. Sheffield depicts their courage and determination, revealing their humanity through stories of sacrifice, resistance, and hope. Weaving together historical records with imaginative reconstructions of dialogue, setting, and descriptive elements beyond the dusty courthouse pages, these stories recount the lived experiences of those who risked everything to exercise their right to vote.   Ric S. Sheffield, author of We Got By: A Black Family’s Journey in the Heartland and False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in 1800s Ohio, has researched, taught, written, and lectured extensively about rural diversity in general, and the Black experience in small town America in particular. As co-director (with Prof. Howard Sacks, Kenyon College) of the award-winning Community Within: Black Experience in Knox County, Ohio project and co-director (with Prof. Brooke Bryan, Antioch College) of the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s (GLCA) Oral History in the Liberal Arts (OHLA) program, he has designed and executed projects intended to explore minority communities in small town America. He also offers workshops on exploring diversity in rural geographies and cultural contexts.   This event is sponsored by the Washington County Public Library and is FREE and open to the public. We are looking for applicants between the ages of 8 and 18 to perform or display their work. The categories include: Poetry recitation or memorized monologue or speech (no more than four minutes) of a historical nature. Costumes are optional. Musical presentation, either vocal or instrumental, of a song from the colonial era or a song representing American history. (up to three minutes, there is no piano on site) Original art works or crafts representing our American history, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, or crafts such as quilting projects, braided rugs, etc. To enter for a chance to be in the Showcase, please complete the application and send a video of your presentation or artwork and the application to [email protected] with the subject line SHOWCASE. Students will learn the Tiffany method, (the copper foil method), to create one or more projects that showcase the beauty of stained glass. Students who have no experience with stained glass are welcome, as well as students who have experience but wish to build upon that foundation.   Super Saturday! Petting Zoo - Beverly   On April 25, our Super Saturday will be joined by Jungle Island Zoo (Thank you, Friends of the Beverly Library). Their newest attraction, the “CUDDLE SHUTTLE”, offers hands-on encounters with some of their most adorable critters—a heart-warming experience with a variety of cuddly babies, delightful miniatures, lovable small animals, and birds. Guests can stroll through the display, petting and feeding treats to an assortment of various species. Many may choose to take advantage of the Photo-Op area, taking pictures or selfies while snuggling with their choice of photogenic pets. THE CUDDLE SHUTTLE WILL BE AT WATERFORD ELEMENTARY 11 AM-2 PM.
