In this class we will learn how to draw and paint plants in the classic botanical painting style. Beginners will learn basic drawing techniques and advanced students will sharpen their skills. Supplies are provided. About the Instructor: Addie Hirschten is a contemporary impressionist painter, art teacher, author of several books and host of the Studio Alchemy Podcast. When working as an art instructor, Hirschten enjoys helping others to develop their own style and artistic voice, not just copy the instructor.  While developing curriculum for the art classroom Hirschten wrote the book, “The Alchemy of Art: Stories for the Classroom,” a collection of folktales and true stories about artists.  Other books written by Hirschten include “The Alchemy of Painting: Developing Your Style and Purpose,” “Start Selling Your Art: A Guide to Starting a Professional Art Business” and “The Alchemy of Symbols.” Hirschten has recently moved to Abingdon and is renovating an old church to be a home and art studio. In this camp, teens will learn from professional artist and photographer, Morgan Ford.  Teens will learn darkroom etiquette and safety, exploring a variety of imaging techniques including: Lumen prints, photograms, cyanotypes, pinhole camera, and non-toxic “kitchen” film developing. Teens will also have the opportunity to work with digital photography via portraits, photo scavenger hunt and/or photo collage outside of the darkroom. Morgan Morgan’s  love of art & photography started at a very young age with a sketchbook always in hand, she took her first photography class in high school and fell in love with the process of light and catching brief moments in time.  Morgan studied at Brooks Institute of Photography and went on to work in advertising in San Francisco after college. After leaving California and advertising behind she resumed her passion for film photography and working in the darkroom. Morgan has had exhibits all over the country showing her Fine Art B&W Photography of beautiful countrysides, wild horses, and dilapidated buildings. She currently resides in Abingdon, VA and has an art gallery on Main St. where she represents regional artists. Note: This camp is ideal for the teen who loves photography and doesn’t mind working in a tight / small space or in the dark, and is eager to learn more technical aspects of art-making. Come join us for this 2-part workshop designed to help you develop your brand.. Kelly Porter, design educator and Associate Professor of Graphic Design at East Tennessee State University, will walk you through the process of defining your brand and creating consistency that will differentiate you and attract your target audience. You’ll be learning the process that experts go through, such as establishing your brand voice, creating a compelling brand story, using color theory and typographic choices to express your brand’s personality, best practices in design, and building brand assets for marketing yourself. Additionally, Kelly will walk you through her favorite free and affordable design resources including Canva.   JUNE 11 – Defining Your Brand On the first day, participants will explore core branding principles under the guidance of Kelly Porter. The session will cover: Brand Definition: Learning how to articulate their personal brand based on their uniquepersonality and strengths. Brand Voice and Visual Identity: Establishing a distinctive brand voice and using colortheory and typography to express their brand personality.   Expected Outcomes: Participants will leave this two-part workshop with an understanding of branding principles, practical design skills, and the ability to manage their brand assets effectively. Additionally, the workshop will foster a network of peers, providing ongoing support and collaborative opportunities for future growth.   Kelly C. Porter, M.F.A. joined the faculty of East Tennessee State University in 2014. She earned an M.F.A. in Studio Art, Graphic Design, from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a B.F.A. from the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg in Graphic Communication. Before switching to academia, Kelly worked as a designer and design researcher with Ryobi Power Tools, and with clients such as the B.B. King Museum, Mississippi Delta Tourism and the Mississippi Blues Trail. Kelly teaches graphic design and visual communication courses and works with other departments, colleges and within the community to create cross-disciplinary, real-world, and service learning experiences for her students. Her work in branding, identity design, sustainable design and photography has been recognized and awarded in local, regional, national and international design competitions. She is currently working in the collaborative intersections of environmentalism, sustainability and design.

In this camp, teens will embellish, transform, and construct functional art to be used or worn. We’ll learn some basics about fabric dyeing, printing, and machine sewing to create a zippered pencil pouch. Later, guest artists will guide teens through the process of hat painting and creating wearable cyanotypes! Time permitting (sorry, pun is intended) we’ll take an afternoon to design and assemble our own analog clocks. Finally, we’ll plan the designs for our own wooden campfire chairs (Viking chairs), which will be built from scratch or modified and embellished, depending on the participants maturity and ability to use tools safely. (Assessed and determined by WKMA staff). Additional mini projects in clay or printmaking may be included in the mix as we find the pace that works best for the group. This camp is ideal for the teen eager to learn new tools and sharpen their skills in textiles/sewing, ceramics, and woodworking, as well as use rulers and basic math. Here is your opportunity to get a glimpse into the world of darkroom film photography and alternative processes. Take advantage of the summer sun to make beautiful cyanotypes on paper! One of the oldest photographic techniques, cyanotypes involve coating paper with a light-sensitive emulsion and laying objects or transparencies on the paper, then exposing them using the sun. After a water rinse, cyanotypes develop into a deep blue and white print. All supplies will be provided.  Morgan Ford is a Fine Art Photographer specializing in B&W Medium Format Photography. Do it all! This camp is a mixed media balance between guided projects and open activities to explore self-expression across traditional 2D and 3D art. First, we’ll start with the foundation of art-making: observational drawing. Then, we’ll dive deep to play with wet drawing media and pastels. Next, we’ll take a day to explore color theory, watercolor and gouache, and do some nature studies in plein air (weather permitting!). Midweek, we’ll get technical with encaustic painting and a little printmaking, then close out the week in the ceramics studio. Teens will learn projects from seasoned Art Lab educators and special guest artist-instructors. (Keep an eye on social media for guest instructor announcements!) This camp is for the true art-loving teen who wants to develop foundational skills in painting, drawing, and printmaking, and who is interested in adding new skills for continued academic study in art.
