We will work with natural cotton bandanas and processes including block carving and printing, stenciling, glue resist, wax resist, and more (time permitting). The focus of this class is less on finished product and more on process and experimentation with the goal of getting participants comfortable with printing techniques, unfamiliar tools, and layering color and imagery.

December 10th: Seasonal Winter Crafting Topic: Winter Inspired Art 7-18 Winter project: Students of all ages will create a painting inspired by images of the Deer Mother myths, other winter mythical creatures, and Yule. They can be inspired by these stories and add their own details to customize their painting to make it their own. They will also focus on color usage and composition within their painting.  9:30–11:00 AM: ages 10–12 11:00 AM–12:30 PM: ages 13-18 2:00–3:30 PM: ages 7–9   Homeschool Art Classes: This series of youth art classes is designed to provide homeschooling students with affordable, quality, and fun arts education. Classes will meet once a week on Wednesdays from September through April. All classes can be taken individually but, when taken consecutively, provide a complete curriculum of fine arts knowledge and techniques. Students who participate in any Homeschool Art classes have the option to submit work to the Homeschool Art Student Exhibition that will be on display in the children’s wing of the museum in May.   Classes begin on September 17th and end on April 22nd.   Projects in the first semester (September-December) will be based on the fundamentals of art. Projects in the second semester (January-April) will be based on combining everything that we learned in the first semester with mixed media and sculpture.

Class Title: Abstracting the Figure Instructor: Akintayo Akintobi Cost: $50 Time and date(s): Friday, 12/12 from 11:00AM-2:00PM Location: TBD in Art Lab Skill level: Beginner/Intermediate Audience: Teen-Adult Description: This workshop introduces participants to the abstraction of the human figure by deconstructing it into basic shapes and vibrant color forms. Through painting and compositional exercises, students will explore how to simplify and reimagine the body using bold, colorful arrangements. This approach serves as a foundational method for drawing, helping students visualize the human form as a series of interconnected shapes. Emphasis will be placed on balancing multiple visual elements such as shape, color, and pattern within a composition to create expressive and harmonious works of art. Abstraction encourages the brain to think divergently, allowing it to see multiple possibilities and solutions. The goal of the class is to use this process of transforming realistic images into stylized, shape-based representations to enhance imaginative thinking and neural flexibility. All supplies included. Be on the lookout!]   About the Instructor: Akintayo Akintobi is a Visual artist born in Ibadan, a city in Southwestern Nigeria. He has been painting since he was seven years old, and about a decade ago, he started painting professionally. He earned an MFA in studio art from East Tennessee State University and a Bachelor of Arts and Education, specializing in Painting from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He has participated in several group exhibitions and art competitions locally and Internationally. Akintobi’s work explores the rich Yoruba culture. He uses shapes, African motifs, and patterns to convey the complexity of human emotions, unique behaviors, and reactions to situations in the environment and society he was nurtured. He incorporates symbolic representations that portray metaphors, stories, and aesthetic values particular to the West African and Yoruba cultures.
