FREE talk "Railroad Stations in Rutland and Alfrecha " on Friday, June 19th at 6pm at the Chaffee Art Center. Join us as Bill Badger, President of the Rutland Railroad Historical Society, talks about how the railroad was influencial in helping to define and develop Rutland. This illustrated presentation will look at the Rutland depot over the years and continue south to Alfrecha, the first stop on the way to Bennington. Bring your questions as there will be a Q & A. Attendees can also explore our current Exhibit, "Art in Motion"...we are excited to collaborate with Rutland Railway Museum, Rutland Railroad Historical Society, Community Train Enthusiasts and Chaffee artist members to bring you this fun, creative Exhibit celebrating our railroad history, as well as showcasing our artists work. There are trains displayed and historical photos. Fun fact: George Thrall Chaffee who built the mansion we call our home, was a prominent figure in the train circle. He even had a train station in Clarendon renamed for his 3 children ALice, FREderick and CHArlotte...Alfrecha Station. There is a special gallery that features the works of one-hundred-sixty 7th and 8th grade students from Mr. VanDerKern’s Design Lab at Fair Haven Union Middle School that engaged in a hands-on stone carving unit supported by a grant from the Vermont Superintendents Association and the Vermont Handcrafters Association, with support from the West Rutland Carving Studio. Beginning with hand carving local talc and then using a Glowforge laser to engrave slate tiles, students created original works rooted in the Slate Valley’s slate heritage. Stone provided by Vermont Marble, Granite, Slate & Soapstone. Chaffee artist members’ works are also on display and for sale throughout the mansion galleries and in the Gallery Shoppe that is filled with handmade treasures and gift ideas for any occasion. Be sure to take time to explore the 1890’s architecture and history. Exhibit will be on display until July 17th. Plan to visit the Chaffee to experience the beauty of the 1890s Queen Anne Victorian Mansion and the wonderful works of art throughout. All the Rivers is a global ensemble of immigrant and refugee musicians from 10 countries who now call Vermont home. Founded in 2024 by musical director Avi Salloway (Billy Wylder / Bombino), the group has quickly emerged as a vibrant artistic force for belonging and justice, shaped by the political, environmental, and social pressures facing immigrant communities worldwide. This performance features Steeve Valcourt and Nadine Niles of Haiti’s Lakou Mizik; Colombian singer-songwriter Cintia Lovo; balafon master Ousmane Camara of Guinea, violinist Ernesto Villalobos of Veracruz, Mexico, West African percussionists, and Japanese American drummer Daiki Hirano, in collaboration with Salloway. Singing in six languages and weaving musical traditions from across the globe, the ensemble creates high-energy, transformative performances that invite audiences to dance, sing, and join together in solidarity. Each show becomes a space of story and connection—amplifying immigrant voices while highlighting the cultural richness new Vermonters bring to our state. Recent highlights include a sold-out performance at the Flynn in Burlington, where nearly 1,500 people gathered in music and collective joy in support of immigrant communities. While social play is included, it’s a small part of the curriculum and only takes place when puppy temperaments are a good match. Our open-enrollment format means you can start anytime your schedule allows or soon after bringing your puppy home. With a maximum of 5 puppies per class, you’ll receive plenty of individual attention. Puppy Start Right is a fun, hands-on group class designed for puppies aged 8 to 16 weeks. Each weekly session focuses on introducing your pup to new experiences, people, and the foundations of training using positive, force-free methods. While social play is included, it’s a small part of the curriculum and only takes place when puppy temperaments are a good match. Our open-enrollment format means you can start anytime your schedule allows or soon after bringing your puppy home. With a maximum of 5 puppies per class, you’ll receive plenty of individual attention. There’s no minimum enrollment, so if no other puppies are registered, you’ll enjoy the bonus of private instruction at a group rate! Classes are informal, supportive, and engaging—come ready to learn, laugh, and participate! *To attend, puppies must be 12 weeks or younger at their first class.
