Ramadan represents the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The dates for Ramadan vary around the world because they are based on moon cycles. Ramadan begins when the new crescent moon appears, and it lasts for 29 or 30 days. In order to put more focus in to Allah, many Muslims fast during all daylight hours during Ramadan. The fast is broken with the Iftar meal, which takes place after sunset. Regular Muslim practices of daily prayer and refraining from greed, envy, etc. take on added significance during Ramadan. Beginning in 2006, World Down Syndrome day is held on the 21st day of March because of the significance of triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. "Down syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition, being universally present across racial, gender or socioeconomic lines in approximately 1 in 800 live births, although there is considerable variation worldwide. Down syndrome usually causes varying degrees of intellectual and physical disability and associated medical issues" (World Down Syndrome Day).
