On Friday, February 6th, the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Black Comes to Eugene to the WOW Hall. Celebrate Black History Month at the WOW Hall -- Eric Richardson and guests bring an Afrocentric perspective on the Black Arts and liberation movement. On Friday, Feb. 6th the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly hosts Black Comes to Eugene: A Retrospective with Eric Richardson, at the WOW Hall. Join us for a special evening celebrating Black History Month and the intersection of black music, art, and social movements at Eugene’s iconic WOW Hall. This unique event offers a retrospective through the transformative cultural forces that shaped the 70s counterculture and the vibrant Black Arts Group (B.A.G.) that left its mark on Eugene’s creative scene. The night begins with a brief introduction by Habitat for Humanity Oregon Board President, Eric Richardson, setting the stage for the exploration of B.A.G.’s roots, including their ties to the Black migration story and the cultural revolution in St. Louis, Missouri. We’ll explore the legendary gatherings of poets and musicians that helped shape the Black Arts Group and their impactful contributions to the arts. Engage in a community panel discussion moderated by Trip Summer. This 30-minute conversation will focus on the role of music in Eugene and its ties to the broader freedom movement with Don Hines, Carl Wardeck, Carl Worsenhall, and John Pinkus. Also included will be a film by Oliver Lake. Throughout the night, the vibe of the WOW Hall will be brought to life with psychedelic lighting, evoking the spirit of the 70s and the cultural revolution that took place in this very space. The event will feature displays of posters, photographs, and memorabilia showcasing Black artists who graced the stage here. This event is a celebration of the power of art, music, and the convergence of social movements that changed the cultural landscape of Eugene and beyond. Eric Richardson   Eric has a longstanding relationship with the Eugene-Springfield NAACP and the community at large. He became president of the local NAACP chapter in 2012 and later served as the Executive Director. During that time, Eric worked to establish environmental and climate justice work in partnership with Beyond Toxics and other local organizations. In this new role, Eric is continuing his passion project of preserving the history of the African American community in Lane County. Eric has also served as president of the City Club of Eugene, was on the board of United Way Lane County, and is currently the president of Habitat for Humanity of Oregon. Eric is a father of five who graduated from Churchill High School and raised his kids in Eugene. He took up jazz in high school and currently plays bass in a band. He also works with Nurturely to host a musical cultural story-time for kids on the last Saturday of the month! On Saturday, February 7th the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Daniel Donatoi's Cosmic Country to the WOW Hall. There are a lot of musical influences and sources that Daniel Donato has drawn on during his career and that inform his latest album, Reflector (Retrace Music), his first all-original album. But within those, Donato has carved out a unique and individualized spot for himself, one that speaks to the deep American music heritage that inspires him -- and that he's pushing towards the future with inspired, intentional vigor. He calls it Cosmic Country, a moniker that's both self-descriptive and a statement of purpose. It's an organic rock band aesthetic with plenty of roadhouse twang; a showcase for Donato's instrumental virtuosity and facility for melodically infectious songcraft. Bridging Nashville and the Great West, Kentucky and mid-60s northern California, tie-dye and plaid, it's a world of his own, and a wide world of musical adventure at that. While growing up in Nashville his  his father, who turned his young son on to music of all genres, suggested the fledgling and industriously minded (even at just 14) artist start busking in Nashville's lower Broadway area and outside concerts, for eight hours at a time on the weekends. One night, the two happened by Robert’s Western World where legendary honky-tonk local mainstay the Don Kelly Band were performing.  "Their songbook was that of my main influences still to this day -- Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Bob Wills, Marty Robbins, Bill Monroe, traditional bluegrass music, Hank Williams Sr. -- old-timey music with real stories and emotions that everybody has. It just hooked me right away." Donato eventually became a member of the band, playing four hours a night at Robert's (464 shows in total). Another piece of the puzzle came through later in Donato’s teenage years -- the Grateful Dead, thanks to a high school American History teacher who gave him a pile of bootleg recordings when he was 18. "When I discovered Jerry Garcia, there's really never been anyone who writes like that," says Donato. "From there I went on to discover Bob Dylan and all the great writers and made me want to make that part of what I did as well." The whole package of player, singer, writer and band leader was in place. Two albums in, Daniel Donato and Cosmic Country, featuring Nathan Aronowitz (keyboards/guitars/vocals), Will McGee (bass/vocals) and Will Clark (drums, percussion/vocals) are selling out venues throughout the country and bringing their brand of Cosmic Country to an ever growing, passionate fanbase.

Since 2000, Jean-François Alcoléa creates and presents his own productions with the collaboration of high-skilled artists and technicians. Having an interest in history, ethnology, and sociology, Jean-François Alcoléa prompts it to focus on bygone memories, location showcasing, and in-situ research to produce unique, original shows, event scenographies, and walk-through experiences linked to a location, a theme, or a special event. He acts as a pioneer, revealing himself in 2005-2006 with his creation Allons enfants…, a show featuring the “Manu” (former manufacture royale d’armes in France) and spotlighting site enhancements and memories of the arms plant. Then, he has been inspired by the riverside Marina setting of Cognac, and assembled a collection of tributes by local inhabitants expressing affinity for their river. It went without saying that this reflects poetic evocation more closely than documentary. During the International Zaragoza Exhibition in Spain, he has created a musical video show that highlighted water and showcases the "Fluvial Aquarium," symbolizing the rivers of the five continents. Since Alcoléa creates its own Company, he created 35 different productions. In 2013, he created the show “En plein dans l’oeil - Right in the Eye” , a live movie-concert based on Georges Méliès cinematographic works. Following 700 performances in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Morocco, Canada, England, Scotland, Romania, the USA, Jean-François Alcoléa started to tour in the USA and in Canada in the Fall of 2018, then in Winter and Fall 2022 and Spring 2023. More than 100 shows of “En plein dans l’oeil” have been performed to all audiences and young audiences, as well as workshops, masterclasses and residencies, from elementary schools to universities, even with the Seniors. A fan base has been created in the USA in relation to his artistic skills and work. His fans are now waiting for him to return. Many contacts have been made with arts industry presenters to prepare new tours in North America that lead him to return to the USA in 2024 and subsequent years. Following his international development, Jean-François Alcoléa also presented his movie-concert in Scotland during The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the biggest International Arts Festival, in August 2019. He met new presenters and developed new collaborations all over the world. He is now working on new tours in the United Kingdom, more broadly in Europe and in North America with “En plein dans l’oeil”. By the end of 2023, “En plein dans l’oeil” will have been performed more than 700 times all over the world. In parallel of the performances of “En plein dans l’oeil”, Jean-François Alcoléa creates in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2024 a new show “Les Inattendues”, declined in several parts, combining literature and music. This show is touring in France. Jean-François Alcoléa also considers the development of future collaborations in Quebec and in the USA. In addition to his shows and original creations and event scenographies, Jean-François Alcoléa is also interested in educational workshops linked to his shows. He gets his experience in supervising from his many years as a musical teacher in a few musical schools teaching the piano, musical training and instrumental ensemble. He has animated workshops in Washington DC during his first tour in the USA in 2018, at The universities of Spearfish (ND), Burlington (VT) and College Station (TX) in 2022 or during the Louisville Children Festival in 2023. He is organizing new workshops for his tours, in the USA, in 2024 and subsequent years, like an artist residency of one week in Broomfiled, CO.

The Springfield Arts Commission invites the public to a new exhibit at the City Hall Gallery: Embrace the Mystery, a collection of evocative collages by local artist Corla Bertrand. The exhibition opens with a public reception on Friday, February 13, from 5:00-7:00pm at Springfield City Hall at 225 5th Street. The event is free and includes light refreshments and live music by Brian Cutean.   Bertrand’s work is inspired by dreams and explores symbolism, mysticism, and color through layered collage. Her pieces invite viewers to reflect and connect with both the personal and the universal. The event also features the Youth Art Gallery, located next to the Library entrance, with new multimedia artwork by students from Springfield High School. The exhibit includes drawing, ceramics, graphic design, and sculpture, highlighting a wide range of creative talent. The City Hall Gallery is a welcoming space where local creativity shines. Located next to the Springfield Public Library, it serves as a vibrant stop during Springfield’s 2nd Friday Art Walk, organized by the Emerald Art Center.

On Sunday, Feb. 15th, the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Mark Hummel's 35th annual Blues Harmonica Blowout to the WOW Hall. CURTIS SALGADO - Curtis was half of Robert Cray Band as a co-front man in the first five years of the band’s busy touring schedule starting in 1977. Salgado has since been one of the leading lights of the Northwest’s R&B world, racking up BMA awards every year for Soul Man of the Year in Memphis, Best CD, Song Of The Year and many other notables. Curtis new cd, Fine By Me on Little Village has stayed at the top of the charts most of 2024. Curtis is the Best blue eyed soul singer alive as well as a great harmonica man. MAGIC DICK is the original harp man from the J. Geils Band, whose many hits flooded the airwaves during the 1970s and 1980s. Chart-toppers like "FreezeFrame", "Centerfold", "First I Look At The Purse", "Must a Got Lost", "Give It To Me" and Magic Dick's own "Wammer Jammer" were in the Top Ten off and on for 20 years and made them one of the few top bands(other then WAR) that featured a harmonica prominently in the frontline. Dick went on to start "Bluestime" with J. Geils after the original band broke up, making two CDs for Rounder Records. ANSON FUNDERBURGH Born and raised in Plano, Texas, Blues Music Award winner ANSON FUNDERBURGH’s musical journey began at an early age. When he was eight or nine years old, Funderburgh received his first guitar. A box of 45s accompanied it – Jimmy Reed, T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Albert Collins, Freddie King and Ray Sharpe - singles that pointed him on his musical path. Funderburgh taught himself to play the guitar and went on to make a living doing what he loved with that set of strings. In 1978, he formed the iconic blues band Anson Funderburgh & The Rockets, who continue to define the sound of modern-day Texas blues. Throughout his career, Funderburgh has had the privilege of sharing the stage, and working and recording with many of the biggest names in blues, including Delbert McClinton and Jimmie Vaughan, along with countless others. His unmistakable style, tone and sensibility has made him one of contemporary blues music’s most important guitar players. Anson has developed into a legacy artist and his influence on innumerable guitarists is immeasurable. With each performance, Funderburgh reaffirms his status as a true legend of the blues. MARK HUMMEL - born on the East Coast but raised in Los Angeles. He took up an interest in blues harp & rock-blues music in high school but soon discovered the originators - Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter, to name a few. Soon, Hummel was frequenting the legendary Ash Grove on Melrose Avenue in LA where he saw three blues legends he would later work with on a regular basis: Charlie Musselwhite, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and James Cotton. By 1985 Mark Hummel's Blues Survivors hit the road full time and never looked back. Hummel has been featured on over thirty recordings since 1985, including his Grammy-nominated, Blues Music Award-winning 2014 Blind Pig Records release, Remembering Little Walter. Mark Hummel is a celebrated figure in the world of blues and has long been recognized for his exceptional talent and deep reverence for the blues tradition. RJ MISCHO - Is from the Twin Cities in MN and has garnered a stellar reputation for his harmonica prowess worldwide, thanks for consistently great recordings and constant touring. RJ has been a Hohner Harmonica sponsee for twenty years! Mischo last played the Blowouts in 2018 w/John Primer & Billy Boy Arnold. STEVE FREUND - hails from Brooklyn, NY but moved to the Windy City of Chicago in 1970 at the invitation of legendary blues pianist Sunnyland Slim, who Steve accompanied for twenty years. During this time Steve played with every noteworthy blues person in the city, including Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Koko Taylor( winning a Grammy on her live LP), James Cotton( 12 yrs), Lonnie Brooks, Hubert Sumlin, Big Walter Horton, Lee Jackson, Eddie Taylor, Snooky Pryor, Magic Slim, Henry Gray, Robert Jr Lockwood, Floyd Jones, BB Odom and more. Freund produced Pryor, Slim & Grey for Blind Pig Records. Steve played on Boz Scaggs’ Come On Home cd as well as toured it. He’s recorded three CDs on Delmark Records.
