Entre la Coca y el Oro by Tatiana Arocha

Entre la Coca y el Oro is an exhibition by Tatiana Arocha that weaves art and community together to reclaim the narrative surrounding the coca plant. The exhibition explores coca’s cultural, spiritual, social, and ecological significance while pushing back against colonial and extractivist perspectives. Arocha’s work foregrounds ancestral knowledge, environmental justice, and Indigenous resistance, offering a space for collective reflection, education, and artistic exploration. Opening Day: October 12, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM Opening Day Admission: Free | $5 suggested donation | OPENING DAY TICKETS HERE Exhibition on view: October 12, 2025 – January 11, 2026 Gallery Hours: Friday – Saturday: 12:00 PM – 7:00 PM | Sunday: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art – Main Hall Gallery in Building C Admission: $5 | Student/Senior: $4 | Snug Harbor Member: Free | GALLERY ADMISSION HERE The exhibition unfolds across multiple gallery spaces, each presenting a different facet of Coca’s complex history and significance: “Sueños con Jardines de Coca” – A site-specific installation created in collaboration with the female collective La Fundación San Lorenzo de Barichara, featuring fifty sculptural Coca bushes with exposed roots, suspended in mid-air and crafted from wire, sisal, and pages of 19th-century books that desacralized the plant. “Impending Beauty” – A reimagined 19th-century European tea room where visitors can engage in conversations about Coca, confronting its colonial history and spiritual significance. “Sabio Yarumo, Coca Dulce, Tabaco Frío y Yuca Brava” – A series of intimate video vignettes filmed by the artist documenting the making of mambe in the maloka of the Bora–Muinane reservation. “Weaving Ourselves Into the Land” – A space showcasing results from the workshops, revealing the interwoven histories and identities of the women who participated. Each installation reclaims Coca’s narrative, repositioning it as a symbol of resistance, care, and ecological connection rather than criminalization. Entre la Coca y el Oro is made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, with additional funding provided by the Samuel I. In recent years, cities such as Medellín, Santiago de Chile, Lima, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Mexico City have emerged as epicenters of groundbreaking architectural experimentation. These structures stand as living chronicles of regional identity, harmonizing nature, tradition, and modernity while preserving cultural heritage. Contemporary art and modern architecture arose from a shared aspiration: the moral and material reconstruction of societies scarred by conflict. Together, they serve as powerful tools in shaping collective identity, reinforcing the bond between urban spaces and their inhabitants. PASS: Dandelions + New Research by Madelyn Sher

For her PASS residency, Madelyn Sher will present embodied research related to the new evening-length work she will present at Emory University in April 2026 as the current Arts Fellow, as well as Dandelions, an original composition for dance and music created by her and Leo Hardman-Hill, featuring performances by Erica Lee Schwartz, Carrie Furniss, Judette Elliston, Priya Carlberg, as well as Madelyn and Leo. WHEN: January 10 | 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM WHERE: Carpenter’s Shop at Snug Harbor (View site map and directions) ADMISSION: $10 | Snug Harbor Members receive a 10% discount BUY TICKETS HERE In Dandelions, dancers and singers move through the space together as the piece unfolds, navigating and retracing pathways between one another. Dandelions explores holding on, and letting go – to ourselves, to each other, to things we hold dear – and the uncertainty that accompanies a moment of release. The dance spans various contemporary movement modalities including butoh and dance theater, inspired by the abstract poem-prose of Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons and the poignant heartbreak of James Baldwin’s novel, Giovanni’s Room. Through the metaphor of a dandelion’s bloom and decay, Dandelions describes a recurring dream about love, routine, and change. The piece’s music is reflective of the fragility of its themes. Quivering voices are counterposed with deep silences and fragile consonances that seem ready to dissipate as soon as they appear. As the piece progresses, the intimate horror of time’s passing is reflected in a looping structure that finally snaps viscerally forward. This presentation of Dandelions has been supported by a 2025 DCLA Premier Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Join us for pre-performance refreshments beginning at 1 PM. The performance starts at 2 PM and will be followed by a brief Q & A with the artists. Madelyn Sher is a dance and theater artist from Staten Island. Madelyn’s choreographic interests include rhythms of change, cycles of loving and losing, and finding meaning in coincidence. Her work has been presented at venues and festivals in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Madelyn collaborates and dances with choreographers Chloe London and Nami Yamamoto, and has performed in work by Bebe Miller and Angie Hauser, Duane Lee Holland, evan ray suzuki, Vangeline Theater, and others. In 2025 she received a DCLA Premier Grant from Staten Island Arts to develop and present “Dandelions,” a multidisciplinary composition created in collaboration with composer Leo Hardman-Hill. She has an MFA in Choreography and Performance from Smith College and is the current Fellow in Dance at Emory University. PASS: Performing Arts Salon Saturdays residency program is made possible through generous lead support from the Howard Gilman Foundation, with additional support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
