PASS: Lines in the Water by Torge Goderstad

Lines in the Water sit between two realities of maritime activity. On one side, the use of objective data such as currents, radio alerts, and weather forecasts for navigational purposes. And on the other side, an abstract awareness of the unknown, and the mysticism that has been the source of countless sea stories. Lines in the Water will be a site-specific spatial composition that merges archival material with present-day data from New York Harbor. In the compositional process, I will use historical maritime maps and signals as well as other archival material to influence standard notation and develop graphic notations in a score performed by instrumentalists. Recordings from maritime sites throughout the harbor will be used to influence and dictate the rhythmic, harmonic, and overall structure of the composition. In addition to the recordings, real-time data like wind direction/speed and radio signals from the harbor will be used to determine parameters such as the sonic spatialization while the piece is performed. This anchors the performance to the present moment within the harbor. Join us for pre-performance refreshments beginning at 1 PM. The performance starts at 2 PM and will be followed by a brief Q&A with the artists. About Torge Goderstad Torge Goderstad (b. 1995) is an American artist working with composition, space, sculpture and instrument building. He composes pieces for his instruments and sculptures that are performed, while also allowing his works to function as stand-alone sculptures and installations. He lives in New York City but is also active in Berlin. He graduated (July 2024) from Berlin’s Universität der Künste with an M.A. in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts. He also holds a B.F.A (2017) in Jazz Double Bass from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. ABOUT PASS (PERFORMING ARTS SALON SATURDAYS) PASS is a residency program focused on the creation and development of original works in dance, music, theater, and multi-disciplinary performance. Artists live and work in one of our historic cottages, with access to rehearsal space to develop their ideas and take creative risks. At the end of each residency, artists share their work in a public work-in-progress performance across the campus. PASS provides space, time, financial, and curatorial support to incubate artists in the development of their work. Founded by Gabri Christa in 2015 and directed by Melissa West since 2017, PASS is a unique, sought-after opportunity for performing artists living, creating, and presenting new work in New York City. Snug Harbor is proud of its role as an arts incubator and cultural anchor for Staten Island. PASS: Performing Arts Salon Saturdays residency program is made possible through generous lead support from the Howard Gilman Foundation, with additional support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
