Letterpress Printing Basics Workshop

Hands-on printing art classes in the Book Arts Studio! Learn the ins & outs of letterpress printing. Peruse our collection of vintage metal & wood type, images (cuts) and ornaments to create a truly unique card or poster. Participants will learn the basics of hand setting type and building simple sound designs, paper prep & press set-up and, of course, printing on our Vandercook presses. Each participant will finish the class with a uniquely designed hand-printed poster or set of greeting cards. Please note the class is geared towards an understanding of the craft process, and while personalized creations will be made, the designs will be simple in nature in order to dedicate enough time to designing, typesetting, forme building, printing and press operation, and materials/clean up. By successfully completing this Letterpress Basics class, participants gain the necessary skills to work independently in our Letterpress Studio and become eligible to book Open Studios. Open Studio is available for Book Arts Members only–become a Member here. Class is limited to 2 participants for quality of instruction. If there is only one spot left, and you’re interested in signing up two people, please contact us to arrange for a private booking. This is a three-part class, and participants must attend all 3 dates noted in the registration form.The final class may run until 8:30/9pm.Cost: $200, $185 Members REGISTER HERE for the workshopFill out my LGL Form! Any questions about the class please email [email protected] ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST: JAMESON ALEAJameson Alea (they/he) is an artist and poet whose work is informed by their interests in history, magic, and alchemy. They were born and raised in the Buffalo area and graduated from Canisius College with a degree in digital art and computer science, which led them to a career as a software engineer, public speaker and podcast producer. Nevertheless, Jamey remains passionate about art, working in various mediums, but particularly letterpress. They completed a studio residency at Book Arts in early 2022, producing a 28 card hand-printed deck called the Tarot of Sorts. Screen Print Basics Class

Hands-on screen print basics class in the Book Arts Studio! Learn the ins & outs of printing one layer designs in this TWO night screen print basics workshop to create custom apparel and paper prints! Participants will learn the basics of designing for the screen print printmaking process, prepping & making stenciled screens, paper & print prep, and of course printing by hand. This class will cover basic one-layer printing on paper and fabric pieces, possible projects include: a set of greeting cards, posters, t-shirts, tote bags or tea towels. By successfully completing this Screen Print Basics class, participants gain the necessary skills to work independently in our Screen Print Studio and become eligible to book Open Studios. Open Studio is available for Book Arts Members only–become a Member here. **This is a two-part class, and participants must attend BOTH class dates listed in the registration form. Intermediate Ebru Paper Marbling Techniques

Hands-on art Intermediate Ebru Paper Marbling Techniques art class in the Book Arts studio! Intermediate Ebru Paper MarblingGel-git, Comb + Stippling: Basic Intentional Technique for Beginners In this class we will learn how to mix gall, rake, comb and work with Gel-git, or coming and going, a foundational technique for building more advanced paper marbling techniques such as Peacock, French Curl and Bouquet, in addition to working with basic combing and drawing and stippling – both techniques required to achieve more advanced Italian and Turkish patterns. Students will work towards completing a successful Spotted Zebra print, a semi-traditional pattern making use of Gel-git, deliberate color choices and spreaded stippling, and will leave understanding more about the intricacies of more complex comb and rake techniques. Ebru, originating in Turkey between the 13-15th c. as an adaptation of previous Suminagashi and “painting on water” traditions of 8-12c China and Japan, is commonly referred to as Marbling in the west, where is most commonly associated with end pages (originally used to prevent forgeries and erasure and eventually adopted to include ledger edges). The practice relies on combining water and a plant-based sizing agent to “float” paints on top of a thickened solution, allowing the artist to create pools and puddles of color before manipulating them into patterns. While this Intermediate class is meant to build upon our basic Ebru Paper Marbling class, this class is also welcome to beginners. Things to note:• While having taken the Ebru Paper Marbling class beforehand is helpful, it is not a pre-requisite for this class.• Makers of all skill levels are welcome. This class is suitable for ages teen+.• All necessary tools to participate are provided. Her work integrates the traditional foundations of hand-constructed processes with modern technique. Her workshops are designed with an eye toward revitalizing and modernizing fiber, ensuring the continuation of these skill sets by exposing the art form to new people within new contexts. She was trained in ebru marbling on fabric in her youth and has refined her process on paper and on silk. She teaches retreats and workshops throughout the North East and the Pacific Northwest, where her family has a large sheep farm that specializes in breed conservation for rare or at-risk breeds of sheep. Her work has received awards from NY Sheep and Wool and the Carnegie Art Center. In 2022, she was defined as a WNY artist culture-maker and a recipient of the NY Council on the Arts “Creatives Rebuild NY” grant, tasked with rebuilding arts access post-COVID. Screen Print Custom Pet Portraits Class

Hands-on screen print custom pet portraits class in the Book Arts Studio! Create a custom screen print portrait of your pet onto a shirt, tote bag or poster! In this class, participants will learn about the screen print process to hand print a custom image of your pet(s) (up to 3) onto the substrate of your choice. Your registration includes one (1) tote bag to print on! Each student is also welcome to bring up to 2 additional pieces to print on (t-shirt, tote bag, pillow case, etc) (fabric items must be 100% cotton or cotton blend), OR create 2 additional poster prints of your image. You can also pre-purchase additional tote bags from Book Arts for $5/piece before class upon your arrival. Important: Participants are required to send over a high contrast photo of their pet to be approved by the instructor and created into a screen printable image for participant final approval before the workshop.
