Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the Weston AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this two-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: Reserve an appointment for certification here. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Want to learn how? Sign up to this class at the Weston AIC to learn the basics of 3D printing. After going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, each student learns to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers. Each student completes a print. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Cricut machines are easy to use and only limited by your imagination! Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the Weston AIC laser cutter during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours with supervision. Join local pianist and composer Marvin Wolfthal as he returns to the Music Committee’s season on Sunday, December 7, at 3:00 PM in the Community Room. His program, “Franz Liszt in Italy,” will take audiences on a musical journey through highlights from Liszt’s Années de Pèlerinage, Volume II, featuring Il Penseroso, Canzonetta del Salvator Rosa, the Petrarch Sonnets, La lugubre gondola, and Venezia e Napoli. With a distinguished career as a performer, scholar, and advocate for both European and American music—spanning major premieres in Milan, a celebrated teaching career, and award-winning compositions—Wolfthal brings both depth and poetry to this exploration of Liszt’s Italian inspirations. The Legacy of Julia Child's Kitchen with Author and Smithsonian Curator Paula J. Johnson  Virtual Event Join us for a conversation that’s sure to warm your heart (and make your stomach rumble), as we delve into the legacy of cooking icon Julia Child with Smithsonian curator and public historian Paula J. Johnson, author of Julia Child’s Kitchen: The Design, Tools, Stories, and Legacy of an Iconic Space. The book includes interviews with chefs who knew Julia well, commentary on her favorite culinary tools and kitchen gadgets, and a stunning array of photos. Julia Child's 20’ x 14’ kitchen was a serious workspace and recipe‑testing lab that exuded a sense of mid‑century homey comfort. It has been on display at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., for most of the past twenty-three years, and museum goers have made it a top destination. The kitchen contains more than one thousand parts and pieces—tools, appliances, utensils, furniture, artwork, knick‑knacks, books, and bits of whimsy—all reflecting Julia’s status as an accomplished chef, gastronome, delightful cooking teacher, television trailblazer, women’s advocate, mentor, and generous, jovial friend. Julia Child’s Kitchen (and this online conversation) is a must‑have for every serious home cook and Julia Child fan. Johnson is a curator and public historian at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. She conducts research and collects objects relating to the history and culture of American food and serves as the Director of the Smithsonian’s Food History Project. Johnson was one of the curators who collected Julia Child’s home kitchen in 2001 and led the team that created FOOD: Transforming the American Table, a multi-layered exhibition that explores the major changes in food production, distribution, and consumption in the United States since the 1950s. She has shaped and contributed to many public programs on food history and leads the annual “Food History Weekend.” Johnson is the author of many articles and three books, including Julia Child’s Kitchen: The Design, Tools Stories, and Legacy of an Iconic Space (2024). She received the Smithsonian Distinguished Scholar in the Humanities Award in 2020. Johnson began her museum career at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland, and has worked at the Smithsonian since 1991. She is a member of the Association for the Study of Food and Society and Les Dames d’ Escoffier. She serves on the editorial collective for Gastronomica: The Journal for Food Studies. Opera for Everyone with speaker Erika Reitshamer: Come and explore a passionate love story set against the backdrop of turbulent real-life events of the French Revolution — a time when up became down, and Parisians never knew which day might be their last. Andrea Chénier is a poet, brought up in the lap of luxury, but unhappy with the social inequality around him. He’s in love with Maddalena, a beautiful young aristocrat, but her family’s servant Gérard, who resents the privileged upper classes, also harbours a deep passion for her. As the opera goes on, Gérard becomes an integral player in the French Revolution and uses his new power to condemn rival Chénier to death. Heartbroken, Maddalena pleads with him to change his mind and redeem Chénier. Downton and All That Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale 2025,  124 minutes When one considers all of the programs the British have produced depicting their aristocracy and the class stratifications that support it––The Forsyte Saga, The Crown and Upstairs, Downstairs to name a few, it is a curious thing that Downton Abbey has resonated as deeply as it has all over the world. The program has some very curious origins. In 1999, the actor and novelist Julian Fellowes wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for Robert Altman’s ensemble project Gosford Park. Although it was a satirical murder mystery, Gosford laid out all of the elements that would be seen in Downton, as it involved a 1932 shooting weekend at a palatial manor house in Yorkshire complete with a wasp-tongued dowager played by Maggie Smith. When Carnival Films approached Fellowes a decade later to create a spin-off of Gosford, he reset the series to the Edwardian era, but more importantly, he completely changed the tone. If Altman’s Gosford was biting and cynical, Fellowes insisted Downton be reverential and elegiac. Gone was Michael Gambon’s snarling war-profiteer lord of the manor, replaced by Hugh Bonneville’s sometimes pompous but always earnest hereditary peer. As a Tory peer himself, Fellowes clearly adored the Crawley family as if they were cherished ancestors, and for six seasons Lord Robert, his American wife, his three very different daughters and their houseful of occasionally resentful but mostly dutiful servants would feel the effects the of First World War, the Influenza epidemic and all the cultural changes that followed during the 1920s. When the series ended in 2015, the emotional response was so strong Fellowes was able to follow up with three feature films that would take the storyline up to 1930. The first Downton film would be about all the chaos involved with an official visit of King George V. The second film would be about a movie crew descending on the manor during the transition to talking pictures. For our presentation, we will be showing The Grand Finale, with the Crawley family facing financial ruin as the Great Depression takes hold and eldest daughter Lady Mary ensnared in scandal—only to have the most unlikely angel arrive in the form of actor, writer, composer and West End icon Noël Coward. So please join us as Downton Abbey goes out in style for this movie is officially the last installment (but who knows, World War II is only a decade away, leaving plenty of room for Spitfires to taxi on the lawns while Mary, Edith and Daisy find romance with Yanks in the RAF). Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the Weston AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this four-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Want to learn how? Sign up to this class at the Weston AIC to learn the basics of 3D printing. After going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, each student learns to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers. Each student completes a print. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the Weston AIC laser cutter during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours with supervision. Class participants experiment with multiple techniques -- resists, stencils, textures, inks, grease crayons and transfers. If you have a little one who is scared of dogs, Birdy is the perfect Therapy Dog to help them. Birdy will visit with kids around the Children's Section of the library for the first thirty minutes. (This portion is for children of all ages.) First through Fourth Grade students who would like to practice their reading skills can register to Read to Birdy from 3:30 - 4:30 on a first come, first read basis.
