Film noir remains one of the most iconic stylistic movements in international cinema. Though it has continued today in international media as far as television and video games, it’s most associated with the post World War II movement of dark cinema in Hollywood that shined a harsh light on a society undergoing intense trauma and rapid change. A subgenre of these films is what filmmaker Thom Andersen labels, “film gris.” A series of film noir movies made by socially active communists and left-wingers in Hollywood, that used the stylistic trademarks of film noir and the archetypes of the crime genre to create scathing realist portraits of post-war poverty, disillusionment, and racism. This series looks at three films that particularly focus on the widespread danger of anti-semitism post WWII, exploitative labor in athletics, and the dangers of mob justice. Importantly, these films are works of entertainment that’ll be used to create a wide-ranging discussion on how artists can work within popular formulas to provide though-provoking social commentary and critique. Join the Somerville and Ashland Public Libraries as we talk about the notable lighthouse: the Boston Light!  Boston Light – the first established Light Station in colonial America – began lighting the way for safe navigation into the fledging maritime port of Boston in 1716. The Fresnel Lens in the lantern room and fog signal apparatus situated on Little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor continues as an active Coast Guard maintained aid-to-navigation, today.  However, its notoriety in the maritime community as the “the last manned Coast Guard Light Station” in the country has come to closure with the retirement of Sally Snowman, its 70th keeper. A power-point presentation provide photos of Boston Light’s 307 years of history and few photo anecdotes of Sally’s experiences as a 21st Century Keeper.  We are also thrilled to welcome Jeremy D'Entremont to the conversation! He is the author of more than 20 books and hundreds of articles on lighthouses and maritime history, a great speaker on lighthouses, and is great friends with Sally and Jay.  CLICK THIS LINK TO REGISTER! Unlock the power of your unique voice as a writer in this engaging and interactive workshop.  Whether you're an aspiring novelist, poet, journalist, or simply someone who enjoys putting pen to paper, this course will help you discover and refine your writing voice.  Through a blend of practical exercises and constructive feedback, you'll embark on a creative journey to find your distinctive voice and develop the confidence to share it with the world. About the Presenter: Gabrielle Esposito is a graduate of SUNY Geneseo’s Creative Writing program. Her short stories have been published in The Manhattanville Review, 34TH Parallel, Gandy Dancer and others. Gabrielle’s short story, “The Way Home”, is the second-place winner of the 2023 Doro Boehme Fiction Editors’ Prize. Her work has been nominated for the 2024 Best American Short Story anthology. She spends her free time teaching writing classes for local libraries and editing the manuscripts of talented writers. Questions?
