The current exhibit of 42 panels, rescued from the closing Phillips Screw factory in Stoughton, tells the story of a Falmouth boy leaving home to spend 4 years on a round-the-world whaling expedition. Painted in 1944 by Falmouth artist Lloyd Turner Nightingale, the panels trace the voyage of the whaler A. R. Turner as the crew chases whales across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, from the North Pole to the South Pole, from 1850 to 1854. You'll see the Katherine Lee Bates House and the Congregational Church on the Green as the sailor departs, and the ports visited around the world as they hunted for whales. Artist Karen Rinaldo said the exhibit was made possible by a phone call from Falmouth resident Brian Snow to pick up the display that had spent 75 years in the break room of his family's factory. Local builder Mike Duffany answered Karen's request to take down the 4x8-foot panels. New Wave Printing reduced them to the panels on display. The Fact & Fiction Book Discussion group is a drop-in book club that meets at East Falmouth Branch on the last Wednesday of the month from 10:00am to 11:00am. Join us on Wednesday December 19,  as we discuss our latest book pick Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton. A moving and fascinating meditation on freedom, trust, loss, and our relationship with the natural world, explored through the story of one woman's unlikely friendship with a wild hare. Imagine you could hold a baby hare and bottle-feed it. Imagine that it lived under your roof and lolloped around your bedroom at night, drumming on the duvet cover when it wanted your attention. Imagine that, over two years later, it still ran in from the fields when you called it and slept in your house for hours on end and gave birth to leverets in your study. For political advisor and speechwriter Chloe Dalton, who spent lockdown deep in the English countryside, far away from her usual busy London life, this became her unexpected reality. In February 2021, Dalton stumbles upon a newborn hare-a leveret-that had been chased by a dog. Fearing for its life, she brings it home, only to discover how impossible it is to rear a wild hare, most of whom perish in captivity from either shock or starvation. Through trial and error, she learns to feed and care for the leveret with every intention of returning it to the wilderness. Instead, it becomes her constant companion, wandering the fields and woods at night and returning to Dalton's house by day. Though Dalton feared that the hare would be preyed upon by foxes, stoats, feral cats, raptors, and even people, she never tried to restrict it to the house. Each time the hare leaves, Chloe knows she may never see it again. Yet she also understands that to confine it would be its own kind of death. Raising Hare chronicles their journey together, while also taking a deep dive into the lives and nature of hares, and the way they have been viewed historically in art, literature, and folklore. Neighborhood Falmouth and the Falmouth Public Library offer these lectures jointly. This month's topic is the challenges of aging and securing your financial and legal future while providing for your legacy, with estate attorney Bob Mascali, who also gave the lecture on estate planning back in September. We will also discuss planning options for preserving your savings and protecting your home. Bob Mascali's Bio: Bob is a highly regarded trusts and estates attorney with almost 50 years of experience focusing in the areas of trusts and estates, specializing in elder law and special needs and disability planning. Bob develops estate plans that address his clients’ unique needs while protecting assets and minimizing taxes. Bob is of counsel at Mirick O’Connell DeMallie and Lougee and is admitted to practice in both Massachusetts and New York. Bob has received several awards for his pro bono services and he remains actively involved in the community. He is currently the Chairperson of the Falmouth Select Board and is a Board member of a number of Cape Cod nonprofits, including Neighborhood Falmouth.  Neighborhood Falmouth is part of a growing national movement to promote continuing community residence for older Americans. Let's celebrate the Winter Solstice with the pairing of Pink Floyd's classic album Dark Side of the Moon with the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.  This produces moments of apparent synchronicity where the film and album appear to correspond.  The tradition is to play the album once, starting at the MGM lion’s third roar. After the album ends, the movie continues on its own.   All are welcome, and we especially want to invite crafters of all kinds—particularly knitters and crocheters. Feel free to bring a project and work on it during the film. The current exhibit of 42 panels, rescued from the closing Phillips Screw factory in Stoughton, tells the story of a Falmouth boy leaving home to spend 4 years on a round-the-world whaling expedition. Painted in 1944 by Falmouth artist Lloyd Turner Nightingale, the p......More

The current exhibit of 42 panels, rescued from the closing Phillips Screw factory in Stoughton, tells the story of a Falmouth boy leaving home to spend 4 years on a round-the-world whaling expedition. Painted in 1944 by Falmouth artist Lloyd Turner Nightingale, the panels trace the voyage of the whaler A. R. Turner as the crew chases whales across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, from the North Pole to the South Pole, from 1850 to 1854. You'll see the Katherine Lee Bates House and the Congregational Church on the Green as the sailor departs, and the ports visited around the world as they hunted for whales. Artist Karen Rinaldo said the exhibit was made possible by a phone call from Falmouth resident Brian Snow to pick up the display that had spent 75 years in the break room of his family's factory. Local builder Mike Duffany answered Karen's request to take down the 4x8-foot panels. New Wave Printing reduced them to the panels on display.
