Ricardo Rosales will join us on the first Saturday of each month for a special music class in Spanish and English. Expand your musical and language skills! About Ricardo: Ricardo Rosales is a classically trained bassoonist from the school of music of Guanajuato University, Mexico. He has over 20 years of experience teaching music theory and practice with students of all ages. He was in Los Cenzontles Cultural Arts Academy in San Pablo, California for 5 years teaching guitar, piano, and voice for kids 6-12 years old. In addition to teaching and playing Mexican folk music, he played with the San Francisco State University Orchestra, Golden Gate Symphony and with chamber groups around the Bay Area. This class will specifically focus on creating art books. Recommended for makers ages 10 to 110. Younger makers may do best working together with a caregiver in a single registration slot. Join Randall Warniers for a talk on the "enduring Greatness of Jane Austen", in celebration of the 250th anniversary of her birth! Jane Austen was born in Hampshire, England on December 16, 1775, the seventh child (out of eight) in a family headed by an Anglican minister. She grew up in a lively and creative house, and wrote plays and stories for the amusement of her family. Between 1811 and 1817 she published six novels, the last two published posthumously after her early death in 1817. Today her novels are adored around the world for their intelligence, wit, and wise understanding of human behavior and the confining rules of Georgian society. BIO: Evan Schwenterly is a local filmmaker and video technician who has specialized in documentary filmmaking and film restoration since 2001. In addition to working on PBS broadcast documentaries and independent films, Evan has created a professional niche within which he digitally transfers and restores old 8mm, Super-8mm, 16mm, and 35mm film prints, some of which have become the raw assets for his artistic process. From 1997 to 2000 (or so), Evan was also a very happy Library Page at the Concord Free Public Library. LUX ETERNA (Gallery Exhibition) The artwork is created by utilizing frames of damaged Super 8 mm film from 1964 to 1974, which suffered from varying mold damage, heat/cold exposure, and general chemical degradation, dependent on the particular film stock and filmed content at the time. Concord Free Public Library Poetry Series presents Hannah Larrabee and Carolyn Oliver With Q & A, book signings, refreshments PLEASE REGISTER BELOW FOR A SEAT IN THE FORUM Two remarkable poets show how to live in traumatic times and beyond the known world. Hannah Larrabee's Wonder Tissue won the Airlie Press Poetry Prize. Her new chapbook, The Observable Universe, is out from Lily Press and was longlisted for a Massachusetts Book Award. Hannah's had work in Wild Roof, Flypaper Lit, River Heron Review, Gertrude Press, Maine Review, Molecule, Glass: A Journal of Poetry, and elsewhere. She wrote poetry for the NASA James Webb Space Telescope program, and she participated in an Arctic Circle Residency with artists and scientists in October 2022. Hannah received an MFA from the University of New Hampshire where she studied with Charles Simic. She’s currently an editor at Nixes Mate Review.  Carolyn Oliver reads from her second poetry collection, The Alcestis Machine (Acre Books, 2024). Inspired by the Greek myth of Alcestis, this poetry collection brings to life myriad voices who venture beyond the known world and exist between realities. In Greek mythology, Alcestis descends to the mysterious kingdom of death in her beloved’s place. In The Alcestis Machine, loss and queer desire echo across the multiverse. “In another life, I’m a . . .” sea witch or swineherd, vampire or troubadour, florist or fossil or museum guard, Oliver writes. These parallel personas inhabit space stations and medieval villages, excavate the Devonian seabed, and plumb a subterranean Anthropocene. In possible futures and imagined pasts, they might encounter “all wrong turns and broken signs” or carry “a suitcase full of stars.” Oliver’s poems are animated by lush, unsettling verse and forms both traditional and experimental. The Alcestis Machine demonstrates how very present absence can be and how desire knows no boundaries. In neighborhood subdivisions or the vast reaches of space, it’s impossible to know “whose time is slipping / again.” Anyone “could come loose / from gravity’s shine.” Carolyn Oliver is the author of The Alcestis Machine (Acre Books, 2024); Inside the Storm I Want to Touch the Tremble (University of Utah Press, 2022), selected by Matthew Olzmann for the Agha Shahid Ali Prize in Poetry; and three chapbooks, including, most recently, Night Ocean (Seven Kitchens Press, 2023), which was selected for the Rane Arroyo Series. Her awards include the Goldstein Prize from Michigan Quarterly Review, the E. E. Cummings Prize from the NEPC, the Writer’s Block Prize in Poetry, and the Frank O’Hara Prize from The Worcester Review, where she later served as editor-in-chief. Carolyn was a 2023-24 Artist in Residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Her poems appear or are forthcoming in Poetry Daily, TriQuarterly, Ecotone, CopperNickel, Image, Consequence, and elsewhere. What does it take to build community? We'll seek inspiration in books and talk to others interested in creating and strengthening connections in this book club started by our friends at Art for All. Books for each month will be available for pickup at Fowler. Due to the timing of our meetings, please feel free to bring lunch. We will typically meet the third Monday of the month.
