Practice the "art of seeing" by slowing down and observing the mighty and micro worlds that surround us. After an introduction by our presenter Shilin Hora indoors, weather permitting, we'll walk to Austin Gardens, find a sit spot and allow nature's unique show to unfold. Record your discoveries in the provided notebook through creative expression like observational writing, sketches, or rubbings. Discover how artists and naturalists capture the hidden beauty and stories of the environment.Blank notebooks will be distributed for use in the Summer Senses Series at each of the three sessions. You are welcome to attend one, two, or all three sessions, occurring on June 11th, July 8th, and August 15th. They are designed to be both individually enjoyed as well as to deepen sensory engagement throughout.Shilin Hora is a Botanical Artist and Nature Enthusiast who leads folks back to an appreciation and reverence for nature through beautiful artworks and extraordinary nature experiences. Growing up outdoors, Hora spent her childhood stomping through peach orchards, grape vineyards, and corn fields in St. Joseph, Michigan. She remembers being drawn to the magnificent world of botany and began landscaping miniature gardens inside Ball canning jars. Her interest in sculpture and printmaking led her to study at Grand Valley State University (B.F.A. 2001), where she developed her craft. She learned to observe with intention, creating botanical illustrations directly from botany collections. In 2016 Hora collaborated with the Park District of Oak Park to open the district's first Nature Preschool located in the Austin Gardens Environmental Center where, as lead pre-school teacher for 3 years, she spearheaded a transformation within community thinking and action, based around Early Childhood nature education. Her custom art and botanical box collections are exhibited nationally.

Generative Interference is an exhibit of paintings by Thomas McCue, representing some of his most recent work and going back approximately two years. As a first foray into solo exhibition, this showing represents a span of experimentation and evolution of both subject and process over that time.Working with a basic premise of taking "snapshots from an imagined narrative," Thomas works generatively, making marks intuitively and allowing subject matter to emerge over the over the course of work. Drawing from his surroundings, biological forms and processes, and "entities" from a lifetime of sci-fi and fantasy culture obsession, Thomas goes through an automatic and expressive synthesis.He works in a visual context of vision impairment where dynamic noise interferes with his central vision. Considered legally blind or "low vision," Thomasâs perception of the world has changed dramatically along with his vision loss over 20 years ago. His process has changed accordingly, using close looking, photos as reference, and a game of memory, his work often functions as a palimpsest over which multiple layers create alternating dissonance and harmony. The result is color-tuned to register with his own low-color perception, with high saturation, color intense images oscillating between pure abstraction and emergent forms intriguing, menacing, and mysterious.About the artistThomas McCueâs art practice is focused on painting and drawing, using an intuitive, expressive, and gestural mark-making process to generate intensely colored and suggestive abstract images. His subject matter draws from his unique perceptual experience of his surroundings, biological forms, and a premise of "snapshots from imagined narratives."In 2000, Thomas experienced profound vision loss due to a hereditary neurological disease, reducing his eyesight from 20/20 to 20/2000, considered legal blindness or "low vision." The condition has the effect of visual "noise" interfering with his central vision, making many visual tasks difficult or impossible without technological assistance. Once romanticized as a malady of poets, today tuberculosis is seen as a disease of poverty that walks the trails of injustice and inequity we blazed for it. In 2019, author John Green met Henry Reider, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. John became fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequities that allow this curable, preventable infectious disease to also be the deadliest, killing over a million people every year. Drawing from his surroundings, biological forms and processes, and "entities" from a lifetime of sci-fi and fantasy culture obsession, Thomas goes through an automatic and expressive synthesis.He works in a visual context of vision impairment where dynamic noise interferes with his central vision. Considered legally blind or "low vision," Thomasâs perception of the world has changed dramatically along with his vision loss over 20 years ago. His process has changed accordingly, using close looking, photos as reference, and a game of memory, his work often functions as a palimpsest over which multiple layers create alternating dissonance and harmony. The result is color-tuned to register with his own low-color perception, with high saturation, color intense images oscillating between pure abstraction and emergent forms intriguing, menacing, and mysterious.About the artistThomas McCueâs art practice is focused on painting and drawing, using an intuitive, expressive, and gestural mark-making process to generate intensely colored and suggestive abstract images. His subject matter draws from his unique perceptual experience of his surroundings, biological forms, and a premise of "snapshots from imagined narratives."In 2000, Thomas experienced profound vision loss due to a hereditary neurological disease, reducing his eyesight from 20/20 to 20/2000, considered legal blindness or "low vision." The condition has the effect of visual "noise" interfering with his central vision, making many visual tasks difficult or impossible without technological assistance. Following years of adaptation and working as a professional experience designer, Thomas has returned to his art practice, learning to work with his unique visual constraints, using close viewing, cameras, organization, and memory in his process.

We are dedicated to creating a space where anyone can practice meditation with others and connect with the wisdom of the tradition in ways that are meaningful to them. Although one doesnât need to be Buddhist to practice meditation, our form of meditation comes from the Buddha by way of Tibet. We use a wide variety of Buddhist-inspired readings to support our practice and to bring our understanding into daily life. We start each in-person session with a pre-meditation stretch drawing from Qi Gong and Tai Chi body movement practices. We meditate together. For newcomers to meditation, you can arrange meditation instruction. Meditation can be done on the mat, sitting in a cross-legged position or on a meditation bench, in a chair or in a wheel chair. Meditation is followed by group discussion of reading material that supports our meditation practice.
