The Big Fall Book Sale offers something for everyone, with thousands of gently used books in more than 50 categories, including books for children from infants to teens literature and classics fiction, mystery, and SciFi and fantasy graphic novels and manga art, photography, history, math, science, psychology, religion, biography, business, cooking, gardening, performing arts, travel, foreign language, education, reference, and more, including Noteworthy, especially antiquarian books. Plus vintage vinyl records, DVDs and CDs. The book sale hours, with free admission, are as follows: Friday, December 5: 12-6 pm*Saturday, December 6: 9 am - 5 pmSunday, December 7: 11 am - 5 pm (almost everything half-price)Monday, December 8: 9 am - 4 pm (shoppers can fill our logo bag for $10 per bag, or their own equivalent-sized bag for $8, or buy individual books at half-price) *On Friday morning, December 5, from 8:45 am to 12 pm, the Book Sale will be open only to patrons who purchase an Early Access ticket in advance. Meetings are held each Friday from 10 to 11 am in Room 216 on the Library's Upper Level and simultaneously online. This is a conversation group rather than a language class — there are no textbooks, homework, or formal lessons. Participants engage in unscripted discussions in Japanese for one hour on a variety of topics. The group welcomes anyone interested in Japanese conversation however, a strong level of listening comprehension is recommended for a more enriching experience. This meeting is not suited for complete beginners. First-time participants are encouraged to attend in person to familiarize themselves with the format. The moderator, a native Japanese speaker, provides occasional guidance to facilitate effective communication in a supportive and welcoming environment. The Westport Library is delighted to present two, free weekly Writing Sprints to Prompts and an AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) with award-winning author and teacher Tessa Smith McGovern. This is like a write-in but with extras …it's writing time followed by a 30-minute Q&A where you can ask Tessa anything about writing, publishing, or marketing your stories (including where and how to submit for publication). When?: Daytimes: Every Tuesday from 12-1:30 pm ET Evenings: Every Wednesday from 7-8:30 pm ET We’ll chat for the first few minutes and then Tessa will share some prompts and first lines which writers can use, tweak or ignore. The time can be spent on new words or world-building, revising – anything at all – doesn’t even have to be creative writing. Then we’ll write for 50 minutes, after which we'll have a 30-minute Q&A where we discuss writing goals and obstacles (and tips to overcome them) for the coming week, as well as that week's submissions. This program will be geared toward all students in Grades 9-11 and their families, including those in the early stages of the college exploration process at various levels of need. This session offers clear, practical guidance from a nationally respected college financial planning expert who specializes in helping families make informed choices that will empower students. About the GroupThe Westport Library and The Residence at Westport are now offering a drop-in support group for caregivers of senior individuals or those living with dementia. Starting November 11, 2025, the group will meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, with professional and certified facilitators on hand to offer guidance, resources, and a compassionate ear. Caring for a loved one as they age can be deeply rewarding — but it can also be overwhelming, isolating, and emotionally complex. This group is designed as a safe, judgment-free space where caregivers can share experiences, seek advice, and connect with others who truly understand the journey. Whether you’re navigating new challenges, seeking practical tips, or simply looking for a place to feel seen and supported, you are welcome here. Together, we aim to break down the stigma surrounding dementia and aging, and to remind caregivers that they are not alone. About the FacilitatorsAddie Ricci, executive director of LCB Senior Living, is a national certified dementia practitioner through the National Dementia Institute of Education, and is also certified in habilitation therapy and support group facilitation through the Alzheimer's Association. Ricci has worked in senior living for 19 years and is passionate about providing great care to seniors, specifically those living with cognitive impairment, and their families. She has held many successful caregiver support groups and finds that the most valuable support is that which caregivers give each other. Meredith Ledney, reflections director at The Residence at Westport, is a national certified dementia practitioner through the National Dementia Institute of Education. Ledney recently worked in an all-memory care community as the director of engagement. She is passionate about connecting with seniors living with cognitive impairment and helping their loved ones through the journey. As part of Verso University’s lifelong learning program in partnership with the Library’s Common Ground Initiative, Steve Parrish – Westporter and retired Senior VP of Corporate Affairs of Altria Group, Inc. -  leads Common Ground Conversations: Foundations in Civil Discourse, a six-part interactive training series exploring the nature and value of civil discourse - constructive, attentive, and non-aggressive conversation between people with different views – in public and private conversations. The course includes case studies, guest speakers, role play, participant engagement and more.  Upon completion of the series, participants receive a Certificate in Civil Discourse from the Library.  Space is limited to ensure individual attention, and attendance at all sessions is preferred.   As Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs of Altria Group, Inc., Steve Parrish was responsible for the corporation’s government relations, communications, issues management, philanthropy and compliance departments and led the company’s outreach to public health organizations, civic groups, the media and government. Media appearances include: Meet the Press, Face the Nation, The Today Show, Nightline and PBS News Hour. For more than a decade, Steve worked with bipartisan members of Congress, regulators, and public health officials in support of proposals to grant the FDA authority to regulate the tobacco industry. His efforts were documented in ABC’s “Peter Jennings Reporting”, a New York Times Magazine cover story, and former FDA Commissioner David Kessler’s national best-seller A Question of Intent. After retiring from Altria in 2008, Steve founded Steve Parrish Consulting Group, LLC, specializing in crisis management, corporate social responsibility, public affairs and communications. He is currently on the Board of Directors of Orchestra Lumos (formerly Stamford Symphony Orchestra) and Director Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of Carleton College, the League of American Orchestras and Safe Horizon, an internationally recognized victims’ assistance organization. Steve’s past board service includes the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Milano School of the New School University, and Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation.
