Morro Coast Audubon Society Presents  Field Trip:                 Morro StrandShorebirds  Date:                          Feb. 15, 2026  Time:                          9:00am to 12:00pm   Leader(s):                 Claudia Freitas& Karen Watts  Description:  Takea leisurely stroll along Morro Strand in search of winter migrants andbeach-dwelling shorebirds. Weâll explore the pond and outflow of Alva PaulCreek, a freshwater haven that attracts gulls, terns, and a variety of otherbird species. The walk will follow a flat trail and beach, with some stretchesof deep sand. Expect a relaxed pace over a distance of about 2 miles. This field trip is not ADA accessible, restrooms areavailable, and the trip is open to all levels of experience. Here in Cambria we are surrounded by spectacular nature. Greenspace's Nature Club offers a multi-generational experience for adults and children to explore and deepen our connection to nature and to share adventures. We can build on the beach with driftwood, explore nature art, build fairy houses, collect rocks, find moonstones, build rock cairns, follow tracks, learn about edible plants. The possibilities are endless. Sue Davis, who has 45 years of experience as an Early Childhood Educator, will facilitate the Greenspace Nature Club.The club will meet the third Sunday of every month, 3-5 pm. Locations will vary. Description:  When we think of sounds in the ocean, we think of whales and dolphins, but the underwater soundscape is far richer and more diverse than that. In this presentation, Marie Goeritz will explore the hidden world of animal-generated sound beneath the waves, with a special focus on invertebrates. From snapping shrimp to crabs and lobsters, many animals produce and respond to sound in ways that shape their behavior and interactions with their environment. Drawing on examples from across the marine world and insights from her own research, Dr. Goeritz will introduce how crustaceans use the oceanâs soundscape as a sensory cue for orientation, how they generate sound, how they detect and respond to it, and how they even use sound in courtship-like dances during mating. Bio: Dr. Marie Goeritz is a neurobiologist and educator whose work explores how animals sense and interact with their environments. She earned her Ph.D. in Zoology and has conducted research at the University of Cologne, Cornell University, Brandeis University, and the University of Auckland. Her research is focused on the nervous systems of crustaceans, linking neurophysiology and anatomy with behavior and ecology. Dr. Goeritz currently teaches biology at Cuesta College and serves on the Board of Directors of the Morro Coast Audubon Society as Lands Chair.
