The Golden Age of Hollywood: Film Clips and Discussions from Chappaqua Library
Screwball Comedies.Fast paced dialogue, battle of the sexes, clash of classes, mistaken identity, runaway brides-these were the elements of screwball comedy: between 1934 and 1942 (and after), directors like Frank Capra, Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges, and others, had audiences convulsing in laughter. Librarian and Film Historian Philip Harwood takes us on a journey of laughter through this period of filmmaking.

Field Trip: Shawangunk Grasslands NWR from Saw Mill River Audubon
Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge, Wallkill, NY 12589, USA (map)
Registration required so we can update you on the itinerary. We plan to be at Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge in plenty of time to view winter grasslands birds as well as be present just before sunset to see the flight of Short-eared Owls that rise out of the grasses to hunt at dusk. Dress *very* warmly. We may do some birding beforehand in the Black Dirt region where more northern birds -- like Snow Buntings and Horned Larks -- are seen in the fields. Email our office to register: office@sawmillriveraudubon.org

Films Directed by Women from Chappaqua Library
The BeguiledCpl. John McBurney is an injured Union soldier who finds himself on the run as a deserter during the Civil War. He seeks refuge at an all-female Southern boarding school where the teachers and students seem more than willing to help. Soon, sexual tensions lead to dangerous rivalries as the women tend to his wounded leg while offering him comfort and companionship.Discussion to be led by Carol Durst-Wertheim...."Given the #metoo movement, I searched for films directed by women and released by the major studios. There are too few, but some very interesting ones to share!"
