MWC Happy Hour Book Club - Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese In this book club, MWC member Mona Jha will moderate a discussion of one of the most discussed books of the year. It is a long book so start early if you want to read it, but come if you have read the book, if youâve started the book, heard of the book, are interested in reading the book, or are interested in learning more. Enjoy Indian munchies and good conversation. Read Oprahâs Book Club Pick, an epic saga that takes place over eighty years, beginning in 1900 when a 12-year old girl leaves her village to marry a 40-year old widower.  Our discussion will focus on the historical and cultural events depicted in this 700-page turner, British colonialism, arranged marriages, child brides, the caste system, socio-economic status, Marxism, and misogyny⌠though we could be easily distracted with discussion of relationships between husbands and wives, mothers and sons, fathers and daughters and much more. Gloves, garbage bags, and pickers will be provided.Meet at the red brick pavilion in North Channel parking lot, south of Joseph P. Addabbo Memorial Bridge (Cross Bay Blvd North Channel Bridge) on west side of Cross Bay Blvd. There is overflow parking in the lot across the street as well.Dress appropriately for weather and conditions - hats, sunglasses, sturdy footwear, and sunscreen are recommended. Guided tour of the Nike Integrated Fire Control (IFC) Area will allow you to see the inner workingswhere nuclear armed Nike Hercules missiles were controlled and guided during the Cold War defenseof the New York metropolitan area. While taking a guided tour of this one-time top secret missile site, you will have the opportunity to meet and talk with some of the veterans who worked on the Cold War Era Nike Defesne System. This is a free program, no reservation needed.

Join a Park Ranger for an informal tour and exploration of Hangar B and the aircraft inside, which are part of Floyd Bennett Field’s aviation history. No reservation required.

During this special program, registered visitors will get a chance to climb both the Sandy Hook and Twin Lights Lighthouses. Meet a park ranger at the Sandy Hook Lighthouse where the tour will begin. After climbing the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, visitors will transport themselves to Twin Lights Historic Site for a tour of the South Tower. Tour will conclude at 4:00pm, but the grounds of Twin Lights Historic Site will remain open until 4:30pm. All registered participants must be 48 inches or taller. Join us for an extra concert in our Sunday Series this month to celebrate the magic of jazz. Saxophonist Tom Colao will bring his accomplished quartet. The New World Quartet/Quintet is a well-rehearsed and polished jazz ensemble. The group was formed two years ago featuring local professional musicians who have performed with Billy Hart, Rufus Reid, Kenny Wheeler, David Schnitter, Oliver Lake, Chuck Mangione to mention a few. The members also perform/teach in the metro New York area, as well as, around the country.The members include Tom Colao/alto saxophone, Russ Di Bona/drums, Bob Rodriguez/piano, Tony Scally/guitar and Michael Topping/bass. The music performed is in the tradition of the jazz greats of the past and present. The New World has developed an enthusiastic following in the area. The group’s dedication and joy of the music is the catalyst in developing the band repertoire and sharing their creative improvised music. Park Pals is a new program designed to engage families with young children (aimed at ages 0-6 years old) in safe nature exploration. Designed by Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy in partnership with Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, we hope to welcome diverse audiences and create connections between local families. Each program will have a different focus and consist of indoor and outdoor interactive activities.
