The Health Care Bus Tour is designed to give Manitowoc County high school students the opportunity to learn more about health care and health care related career opportunities, by visiting different facilities in Manitowoc County. Students will tour health care facilities including (but not limited to): Froedtert Holy Family Memorial, Aurora Medical Center, BayCare Clinic and Lakeshore College. There's a nip in the air, but it's still more than adequately toasty for the return of "Tales from the Taproom" to PetSkull Brewing Company's Outdoor Beer Garden! And all of the same, basic rules still apply: no props, no notes, and only five minutes to tell a favorite true story. The theme for this late-September event, sponsored by Seehafer News, from 6-8 PM on Thursday, September 24, is "Stay Tuned!!"   Because even though no one likes to admit it, at some point in our lives almost all of us have spent more than a little time in front of the television. Whether that was watching "Captain Kangaroo" or "Happy Days" when there were under 5 channels available for viewing via an antenna, hypnotized by the latest music videos on MTV, binging on a "Deadliest Catch" marathon via cable or satellite, or slurping-up every streamed minute of "Bridgerton" on Netflix. Share your favorite story of your time basking in the soothing glow of the "Vast Wasteland." You can talk about a favorite program, an impactful televised event, something "interesting" that happened while a show was airing in the background--whatever made an impression that you'd like to tell people about! And as this is an Adults-Only event, nothing is off limits—if you're willing to tell it, it's a story worth hearing.   You don’t have to come to “The Taproom” to tell a story—you can come to just listen, enjoy, and bask in the wonder of communal storytelling. However, should you want to step up to the mic to share a story that fits in with the evening’s theme, sign-up begins at 5:30 PM and we’ll fit in as many stories as possible into the allotted time. Five minutes may seem like a lot of time, but it goes by quickly. And we’ll have a timekeeper to keep you on-track.   We can't wait to hear your television tale during the September installment of "Tales from the Taproom!"

This is the first of two nights that we will be screening the ten short films in the festival in the Balkansky Community Room. Chad Lewis uncovers the origins of Halloween traditions—where shadows lurk and whispers of the past echo—on Wednesday, September 30, from 6-7 PM in Manitowoc Public Library’s Balkansky Community Room. From trick-or-treating, scarecrows, and jack- o'-lanterns, to the folklore of bats, witches, and everything that lurks in the darkness. For over two decades, Chad Lewis has traveled the backroads of the world in search of the strange and unusual. Chad has been featured on the Discovery Channel's A Haunting, William Shatner's Weird or What, and The UnXplained, as well as ABC's Scariest Places on Earth, along with being a frequent contributor on Ripley's Believe it or Not Radio. With a Master’s Degree in Psychology, Chad has authored over twenty books on the strange and unusual. The more bizarre the legend, the more likely it is that you will find Chad there.

The Reality Store is a financial literacy event in which students learn basic skills in financial planning, goal setting, decision making, and career planning. The Reality Store will help students examine their attitudes about their futures and career expectations. After their trip through The Reality Store, students will have developed a more realistic idea of the financial impact their future decisions will have. Event Overview: Prior to the event students choose the future career and receive their monthly salary deposited in their checking account. Students enter The Reality Store with their check book. They first stop at “Uncle Sam” for their tax deduction. They then proceed to “The Bank/Credit Union” for their student loan deduction. Students then have to visit 15 other booths making purchases for their life. Ex: buy a car, home, groceries, utilities, etc... Volunteers: Staff one of the various booths Assist students in making wise financial choices based on their salary  No experience necessary Event goals for the students: Learn basic skills in financial planning, goal setting, decision making and career planning Help students examine their attitudes about their futures and career expectations Develop a more realistic idea of the financial impact their future decisions will have. In order to keep this event focused on education, we ask that volunteers do not bring promotional items to The Reality Store. Please feel free to wear your company’s logo apparel. As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students, all Reality Store volunteers may be subject to a background check based on each individual school district’s requirements and procedures. Each participating school district will follow its own established security policies, procedures, and guidelines when determining the requirements for volunteers. Thank you for helping us create a safe, positive, and successful Reality Store experience for our students. Originally offered as a Teen Event during the Summer Reading Program, so many adult patrons expressed interest in the class that we added an Adults-Only (18+} edition to the Fall Calendar! It all takes place on Thursday, October 1, from 6-7:30 PM in Manitowoc Public Library’s Balkansky Community Room.   Construct a take-along mini library that will fit in your pocket! Choose the books, put up wallpaper, decorate your shelves, and hide the whole thing away in a tiny tin. If you feel stressed, shake up your books, or just dump them all out in a big pile, and put them back in. Calm your mind in the making and in the shaking!   All supplies provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

When Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980, it instantly transformed hundreds of square miles of lush Pacific Northwest forest into a silent wasteland. Though while the world watched what looked like an absolute ecological dead zone, a quiet and unexpected rebellion of life was already beginning just beneath the grey surface. Join author and science writer Dr. Eric Wagner as he explores the fascinating ecological aftermath of this historic eruption. Drawing from his acclaimed book, After the Blast: The Ecological Recovery of Mount St. Helens, Eric’s program traces how plants and animals transformed our understanding of how ecosystems rebuild after a major disaster. He tells a story of remarkable natural resilience that challenges how we view catastrophe and renewal in the wild. About the Speaker Dr. Eric Wagner is a writer and biologist based in Seattle. He holds a PhD in biology from the University of Washington and is the author of multiple works, including After the Blast: The Ecological Recovery of Mount St. Helens, and Seabirds as Sentinels: Auklets, Puffins, Shearwaters, and the View from Destruction Island. His work on science, nature, and the environment has appeared in Smithsonian, Orion, and High Country News. Admission is free and open to the public, with refreshments available for purchase. While this event is free and open to the public, Bank First is requesting that participants bring a non-perishable food donation in exchange for each bag of personal documents shredded. All food donations will go to area food pantries.   Shred Events are a great opportunity to protect your identity while giving back to the community. With the risk of identity theft and fraud becoming more prevalent today, Bank First is proud to offer community residents a way to properly dispose of personal documents while also giving back to local food pantries.
