Mindfulness is the art of paying attention, of listening to your heart. Rather than worrying about the future or ruminating about the past, mindfulness can help you enjoy life more fully, effectively, and peacefully. Join us when you can to learn simple mindfulness and meditation techniques that can be incorporated into your everyday routine to reduce your stress and increase your well-being. Typically, each session will begin with a brief check-in, followed by a guided sitting meditation. Then Gloria will share reflections on some aspect of mindfulness. The group will discuss the topic and ask any questions about the practice. We will end with another sitting meditation. Experience in mindfulness or meditation is not necessary. This program is being offered both in-person and online through Zoom. If you would like to join by Zoom, please register below. Registration is not necessary for in-person attendance. This event is currently full, but please contact Sequoya Library at (608) 266-6385 or [email protected] to be added to the waitlist. Madison Public Library is partnering with the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department to provide a collection of native Wisconsin plant seeds this winter. The native plant seeds have been collected by Dane County Parks volunteers. Native Wisconsin plant seeds are best sown in the fall and left to overwinter. Now the library is looking for volunteers to help with the hard part: packaging the seeds so library patrons can take them home! If you would like to donate your time and effort to this project, please register below! Why native plants? “Native plants are adapted to the local climate and soils, are drought tolerant, disease resistant, and have deep root systems that help infiltrate rain water. Once established, native plants are aesthetically pleasing and require little watering, fertilizing and mowing. … They also provide important ecosystem services such as improved water quality and habitat and food for local wildlife, including numerous pollinator species.” (Dane County Land & Water Resources Department) Interested in helping to pay it forward and collect native plant seeds? Be a part of an adventuring party where you'll use your imagination and creativity to explore a fantasy world in an epic quest. Our Dungeon Master Jared will provide support and help guide campaigns along with our adult D& D experts and our Youth Librarian Ruth. This weekly session is for beginners. < p> About D& D: Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game that allows each player to create their own character to play. These characters embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. Join District 11 Alder Bill Tishler, author and former Middleton mayor Judy Karofsky, and fellow community members for this discussion of DisElderly Conduct: The Flawed Business of Assisted Living and Hospice.  A limited number of copies of the book will be available at the Sequoya Library 'Ask Here' desk, on a first-come, first-served basis. About the book: Judy Karofsky presents a personal account of unmet needs in assisted living and hospice. She aims to spark discussions about new approaches for America’s aging population and family decision makers. There are over 30 thousand assisted living facilities in the US, but most are unaffordable for middle class Americans and fraught with staffing deficiencies and mismanagement. Chapters on the author’s experience helping her mother move from an age-restricted community in Florida to independent living in Wisconsin to assisted living will interest seniors and their family members who know the struggle of finding long-term affordable care. The chapter on hospice care distinguishes it from assisted living through the author’s experiences and misconceptions, then moves to a broader discussion of Medicare spending, and finally a meditation on dying of old age. The author strikes an effective balance between the personal, political, and cultural aspects of aging.
