TMA Contemporary is the Trout Museum of Art’s annual juried exhibition, this year showcasing 118 of Wisconsin’s top visual artists. Works exemplify the cutting-edge art being created by artists across the state, emerging and established. Jurors select artists based on their artistic quality and innovative ideas. Artists draw inspiration from the world around them, personal narrative, the environment, or their inner feelings and imagination. This year’s jurors include Samantha Timm, Mutópe Johnson, and Christina Turner. REGISTERMeet our awesome jurors.Samantha TimmSamantha Timm is the lead curator at Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel, Milwaukee. Timm’s career in the arts began at the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison as curatorial assistant. She has held various positions at art museums in the New York City area. Timm was also curator for Jewel Spiegel Gallery in Englewood, New Jersey. Her strong background in both art history and contemporary art brought her to Saint Kate as art historian and later co-curator with Marcus. In addition to her breadth of experience in the arts, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Art History from the UW- Madison and a master’s in History of Art from the University of York in York, England. Photo courtesy of Marcus Hotels & Resorts. Mutópe JohnsonMutópe Johnson earned his MFA from UW-Milwaukee, Peck School of the Arts Department of Art & Design. Johnson was selected as one of four UW-Whitewater 2015–16 and 2016–17 Inclusive Excellence Program Scholars, a distinguished 2013–14 Imagining America P.A.G.E. Scholar (Publicly Active Graduate in Education), and a 2014 Dedalus Foundation Award-Nominee. Johnson served in positions such as Chief Creative Officer, Global Marketing Brands Manager, Creative Director, and Art Director while concurrently painting for more than 15 years as a professional visual artist. His work has been included in exhibitions across WI and the US. Johnson’s current research and visual arts practice has led him to consider his role as an artist and how the arts can help shape the current state of African-American culture and its rich history. Christina TurnerChristina Turner is the Executive Director of the Trout Museum of Art since 2018. She graduated from the California College of the Arts, San Francisco, with an MFA in Painting and Drawing. She is also a graduate of the University of San Diego with an MA International Relations and the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a BA in economics and political science. Christina has 25 years of business, art, and education experience. TMA Contemporary was formerly titles the SECURA Fine Arts Exhibition.
