Intro to the Christmas Bird Counts

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Learn how YOU can get involved in the time-honored tradition of the Christmas Bird Count this winter!PVAS Host: KC Walters Free and open to the public. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult participant. Registration is required and limited to 20 participants. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible The Christmas Bird Count is the nation’s longest-running community science project, where volunteers of all experience levels team up to count every bird they see in a designated area. This can be in your backyard, your neighborhood, or throughout a whole section of the count circle. This data helps scientists track population trends, guide conservation efforts, and protect species for the future. Join the fun, get outside, and be part of a holiday tradition that truly makes a difference! Upon completing this training, you will be encouraged to sign up for one (or more) Christmas Bird Counts in our area, so, please save these dates! Dec 14 – Washington County Dec 21 – Charles Town Jan 4 – Inwood Walking Distance: Little to no walking.Activities: This is an indoor, classroom event.Restroom: Indoor, flushing restrooms will be available.Parking/Where to Meet: The Shepherdstown Library has about 30 parking spaces. The group will assemble inside the large group meeting room on the right after entering the building.What to Bring: Bring supplies for taking notes: paper/notebook and something to write with.Register Here!About KC Walters: Katelyn (KC) Walters, a Shepherdstown native, is our Associate Director of Conservation and Operations. KC is a Shepherd alumna, and holds a M.S. in Biology, with a focus in forest ecology, from James Madison University. Her master’s thesis evaluated the long-term effectiveness of treating hemlock trees for hemlock woolly adelgid infestation in Shenandoah National Park. During her college education, she interned with The Conservation Fund: Freshwater Institute and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. After graduation, she worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service in southeastern Louisiana where she served as a forestry technician and became a certified Wildland Firefighter. KC then returned home to Shepherdstown and worked with Sustainable Solutions LLC as the Lead Natural Resources and GIS Technician. She joined the PVAS Team in April 2018 as the Land and Conservation Manager. Just shy of five years later, in January 2023, KC was promoted to the Associate Director position she holds today. KC enjoys riding horses, working with her dog, Paisley, on agility training, and stewarding the natural resources on her own property.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Rolling Ridge Conservancy Bird Walk

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Join Bill Telfair and Master Naturalist Scot DeGraf for a morning bird walk at Rolling Ridge Conservancy!PVAS Host: Bill Telfair, Scot DeGraf This is a free/donation-based program. For ages 8 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. Explore the habitat and the bird life with others on the gorgeous trails of Rolling Ridge Conservancy, the largest privately-owned wilderness area near Washington DC and along the entire Appalachian Trail. Anyone with an interest in birding is welcome to join trip leaders Bill and Scot as they explore some of the 1500 acres of protected woodlands. These walks are held on the second Tuesday of every month. Click here to see a list of birds seen in past Decembers! (Some places may not have an eBird list for that month, so that is a great opportunity for you to add the birds you see at this bird walk!) Rolling Ridge Conservancy welcomes donations, which can either be accepted on the morning of the walk or through their website (https://www.rollingridgeconservancy.org/donate). Please ask Bill or Scot how your donations will help foster their mission. The buildings in this area are in a circle and people can park anywhere off the circle.What to Bring: Please wear sturdy walking shoes, bring along drinking water, and dress for the weather. Volunteer Training: Animal Ambassador Caretakers

This program is generally for adults, although teenagers 14 years and older may attend but muct be accompanied by adults on all future volunteer shifts. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible This engaging session is designed to help you feel confident and prepared in your role caring for our resident Animal Ambassadors. Structured training activities will last no more than two hours, but we’ve set aside three hours total to allow plenty of time for questions, hands-on exploration of the space and supplies, and anything else you need to get comfortable. As an Animal Ambassador Caretaker, you’ll help feed and enrich the lives of our educational animals, support basic housekeeping in collaboration with PVAS staff and AmeriCorps members, and may even have opportunities to engage the public at events like Turtle Time. This training is a great way to deepen your connection with wildlife and conservation through meaningful volunteer service.Animal Ambassadors are fed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The times of day are flexible and can be arranged to fit within the Caretaker’s schedule. Walking Distance: This volunteer position involves walking around the downstairs of the Case Nature Center, moving objects like bins that contain water. Volunteer Foraging Workday - Invasive vines

Help Us Harvest Vines and More for our Holiday Wreath-Making Workshop!PVAS Host: Sonja Melander Free and open to the public. For ages 16 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 16 participants. PVMN Volunteer Credit Eligible. Join us for a volunteer workday to help collect the invasive honeysuckle vines—and possibly Oriental bittersweet and other materials— that will be used for our wreath-making workshop the following Saturday. Volunteers will work in small groups of two to three people and should be prepared to go slightly off-trail on uneven ground to cut and gather vines. This workday directly supports our upcoming wreath-making workshop, where participants transform the harvested vines into unique holiday decorations while learning some invasive plant identification, foraging ethics, and the environmental benefits of removing invasive species. Walking Distance: 1-1.5 milesPace/Activities: Self-pacedExposure: Partial shade. EcoCraft Workshop: Holiday Wreaths with Invasive Species

Join us to craft festive, eco-friendly wreaths and bring holiday cheer to your home!PVAS Host: Ellen Kinzer $25/wreath (PVAS members receive a 10% discount). All ages are welcome, though youth must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required, as supplies are limited. Each session is limited to 15 wreaths. Create beautiful wreaths to decorate your home this holiday season! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll help improve our ecosystem by using invasive honeysuckle vines and transforming them into unique holiday decorations. Choose from one of three available time slots. Many of the materials will already have been foraged for you, but we’ll cover the basics of plant identification and foraging ethics so you can carry that knowledge with you. Then, craft your own festive wreath using the provided materials. You can also bring your own decorations (please avoid berries or seeds) to personalize your creation. This workshop coincides with our Nature Center Open House, where you’re welcome to explore our touch table, enjoy a guided tour of the preserve, and more! Bring a travel mug for a warm drink during the workshop (you can also use one of our regular mugs). Don’t miss this fun, hands-on way for the whole family to celebrate the season while helping our preserve thrive!
