USGS Eastern Ecological Science Center Bird Walk

Join Bob and Heather for a morning bird walk!PVAS Host: Bob Dean, Heather Walsh This is a free/donation-based program. All ages are welcome, though youth must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required and limited to 10 participants. Stroll with the birds and other PVAS bird enthusiasts at the USGS center in Leetown! Birders of all experience levels are welcome to join us as we get to know the sights and sounds of our resident birds and some visitors on their migratory paths. The property has a mix of open ponds and woods, with excellent wetland quality and diverse bird species! Click here to see a list of birds seen in past Aprils! (Some places may not have an eBird list for that month, so that is a great opportunity for you to add the birds you see at this bird walk!) Walking Distance: ~ 2-2.5 mile, with the option of dropping out at the midpointPace/Activities: Leisurely (meandering, many breaks to stop and observe)Exposure: Very little to no shade.Terrain: Asphalt, gravel, and mowed grass. The route is generally flat.Restroom: No restrooms are available.Parking/Where to Meet: Park in the lot along Reservoir Rd here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/FmsL7ZBdT6YybPFF7. The group will assemble near the parking area along Reservoir Rd.What to Bring: Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy walking shoes, and bring along drinking water. About Bob: Bob is a retired carpenter looking for a few good birds and orchids! About Heather: Heather Walsh has worked at the EESC for 17 years as a fish biologist. Her research focus is to better understand how environmental changes affect the health of wild fish and what that could mean from a human perspective. She is also a member of PVAS and enjoys birding as a pastime.

Wildflower Walk at Ferry Hill | Earth Day

Enjoy a woodland stroll with us to welcome Springâs first blooms!PVAS Host: Mary Duke This is a free/donation-based program. All ages are welcome, though youth must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required and limited to 10 participants. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible For just a short time each spring, delicate wildflowers emerge from the forest floor, transforming the woods with their vibrant colors before quickly fading away. These spring ephemerals take advantage of a brief window of sunlight before the trees leaf out, disappearing just as suddenly as they arrived. Their timing is everythingânot just for them, but for the pollinators and wildlife that depend on their brief appearance. Join us for a walk through the springtime forest, where weâll search for these short-lived blooms and take in the beauty of a season that never stands still. At Ferry Hill, we can hope to see Cutleaf Toothwort, Early Saxifrage, Spring Beauty, Dwarf Larkspur, Squirrel Corn, Wild Ginger, Pink Shooting Stars, and Dutchmanâs Breeches. Thank you for leaving the wildflowers for all to enjoy! Walking Distance: Approximately 2 miles or less. An entire walk may take up to two hours, but participants may leave the group and turn back at any time.Pace/Activities: Leisurely (meandering, many breaks to stop and observe)Exposure: Mostly shadedTerrain: Earthen trail with some hilly, rocky sections that could be slippery when wet Steep in some areas.Restroom: Restrooms are available for this program.Parking/Where to Meet: Participants will meet at the Ferry Hill Mansion parking area at the top of the hill just over the bridge across from Shepherdstown. About our Host: Mary Duke is a retired teacher & PVAS member who is an enthusiastic gardener & nature lover. One of her favorite joys of springtime is finding & learning more about spring wildflowers. For the past 15 years, she & her husband Walt have attended the WV Wildflower Pilgrimage at Blackwater Falls St. Park & have learned so much from the many knowledgeable leaders that have led their walks there.â
