EBird: Good for You, Good for the Birds! [class, session 1]

*Online class pre-registration and payment required* How to Track the Birds You See Find the Birds You Want to See and Make Your Sightings Count. Have you heard of eBird? Do you think it’s just for advanced or experienced birders? Come learn how this user-friendly database from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology can help you keep track of the birds you’ve seen help you find the birds you want to see both at home and while traveling and how logging the birds you see into eBird counts towards bird research and bird conservation whether you are a new birder or a lifelong lister. Through this series of four workshops you’ll learn what eBird can do for you and why if you are out looking at birds you should be using eBird. In the final workshop we’ll cover other smartphone birding apps that can enhance and lighten your birding experience in the field. SEPT. 2 – EBIRD 101: TRACK THE BIRDS YOU SEE 2:00-3:15PM • A brief overview of eBird the largest citizen scientist database on Earth and how it is changing the knowledge of birds worldwide • Why you should list birds! • How to set up your eBird profile • How to log a bird checklist into eBird and what information is needed • Why numbers count and how accurate do you need to be. • How to share your checklist with fellow birders • How to upload photos or recordings to your checklist as supporting documentation • How to edit or delete data you have entered • How to edit shared checklists to add or delete birds you did or did not see • Understand eBird checklist protocols • How eBird data is reviewed and used making it possible for every level of birder to use eBird • How to view your data to see your County State Country ABA and World lists • How to create and track a Yard or Patch list • Why you have a GREAT excuse to go out birding! Every checklist counts you are not just birding anymore you are doing surveys SEPT. 9 – EBIRD 102: FIND THE BIRDS YOU WANT TO SEE 2:00-3:15PM • How to find out what birds are being seen near you or where you are going • How to see where a particular species is located • How to see at what species are present at a particular time of year • How to view an Illustrated Checklist of birds with site specific photos for a destination you will be visiting • How to view photos of a particular species taken in your area to compare with your sighting • How to get daily or hourly alerts for rare birds or birds you “need” to see • Check out games within eBird to help you learn the birds near you or where you are going SEPT. 16 – EBIRD 201: USE THE EBIRD APP TO SUBMIT CHECKLIST 2:00-3:15PM • How the eBird App on your phone differs from the eBird website • Basics of using the eBird app: Lookups codes intuitive count entries letting the app do the math • How to share your checklist with your fellow birder in the field no homework! • How using the app increases accuracy and saves time • How the app assists you when an unfamiliar location • When and how to create and submit a checklist when you have no cellular coverage in the field • How to edit a submitted checklist in the field SEPT. 23 – MOBILE BIRDING APPS 2:00-3:15PM • How to lighten your load in the field with popular field guide apps why they don’t fully replace a paper guide why you might want more than one: Sibley iBird Merlin Audubon • Discover apps that can help you find places to bird or find birds you “need” while on the road: Bird’s Eye new eBird app Explore functions • How to use online maps to assist your birding: Maps Google Maps Count Circle
