Are you confused about recycling? Come hear from a local solid waste district staff person to find out what goes where in your household recycling bin or at the transfer station. He’ll cover everyday items from yogurt containers to batteries and more. Andy Scherer ......More

Are you confused about recycling? Come hear from a local solid waste district staff person to find out what goes where in your household recycling bin or at the transfer station. He’ll cover everyday items from yogurt containers to batteries and more. Andy Scherer is the Recycling and Outreach Coordinator for the Greater Upper Valley Solid Waste Management District. He works with municipalities, schools, businesses and households to divert waste from landfills and coordinates the district’s recycling, hazardous waste, and composting programs. Prior to working with the solid waste district, he has been involved in sustainable agriculture and education. He can likely be convinced to answer some questions about composting, too!

Title for discussion: The Village of Waiting, by George Packer From group leader E D M Landman MD: A chance encounter in Brooklyn led two young people on a path of art, devotion, and initiation. The Village of Waiting is a frank, moving, and vivid account of contemporary life in West Africa. Stationed as a Peace Corps instructor in the village of Lavié (the name means “wait a little more”) in tiny and underdeveloped Togo, George Packer reveals his own schooling at the hands of an unforgettable array of townspeople–peasants, chiefs, charlatans, children, market women, cripples, crazies, and those who, having lost or given up much of their traditional identity and fastened their hopes on “development,” find themselves trapped between the familiar repetitions of rural life and the chafing monotony of waiting for change. Gastronomy III – Library Book Discussion Series (with a bonus film) Join us for our Fall/Winter season as we explore how food fuels experiences, societies and cultures. We’ll be digging into a classic memoir of kitchen culture, the perils and perplexities of immigration, and the life-changing potential of feeding others and ourselves. Book discussions take place at noon in the Latham Library Community Room and include a voluntary potluck lunch, featuring foods inspired by the books and film.
