As the Brattleboro Legislative Delegation gears up for the start of a new legislative session in January, these monthly sessions are an opportunity to meet the Brattleboro Representatives and discuss issues that matter to you. Topics will include healthcare, education, climate change, and housing. All are welcome to join your Vermont Legislators, hear from experts, and share your experiences. These conversations are scheduled monthly on the 1st Saturdays from 10:30 AM – 12 PM. (Scheduled dates: 2/7, 3/7, 4/4, 5/2, and 6/6.)

Starting this November, Center for Solace (formerly Brattleboro Area Hospice) & Brooks Memorial Libraryare inspired to begin an 8-month collaboration on the first Wednesday of each month, from 6-8 pm. Come join us for a wide range of conversationson tender topics, from Death Cafes, to film & discussion nights,speaker panels, a climate-grief dialogue, and more. Together we’ll explore some of the challenges of being alive in our time.For instance, how might we navigate illness, caregiving, or loss?Or beyond that, face a much broader anguish for our fragile planet itself?Because we know that at least one form of solacestems from staying connected. To quote poet David Whyte, “Solace is not meant to bean answer, but an invitation, through the door of pain and difficulty,to the depth of suffering and simultaneous beauty in the worldthat the strategic mind by itself cannot grasp or make sense of.”   We begin November 5th from 6-8pmwith a Death Cafe in the Community Room. Strengthen balance and build social connection, all while playing and connecting to your inner child with SilverCircus by the New England Center for Circus Arts (NECCA). These circus classes are designed for older adults and are welcome to all mobility and cognitive levels. We will work with each student where they are at, while fostering a supportive and playful group dynamic. Activities will challenge the brain and the body, and will be scaled up and down to be the perfect challenge for each participant.It is not too late to join the circus! Adding native plants to your yard is easier than you think and may be the most important thing you can do for our troubled ecosystem. Learn the basics about why and how to get started.  Black thumb gardeners welcome! This informational talk is served with a side of enthusiasm and encouragement. ____________ Presenter Bio: Jocelyn Demuth is the owner of Checkerspot Farm, a native plant nursery in Colrain MA (10 minutes from the Vermont Border.)  The nursery grows 160 species of native plants from seed for sale.  She is a speaker for Franklin County Conservation as well as a native plant consultant and landscaper.  She is also the author of the Five Hundred Yard Field Trip, curriculum about native plants for students in grades k-8. This curriculum is available for free on the website www.fivehundredyardfieldtrip.com and has been funded by a grant from the MA Dept of Agriculture.

The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss Countess by Suzan Palumbo! Virika Sameroo lives in colonized space under the Æcerbot Empire, much like her ancestors before her in the British West Indies. After years of working hard to rise through the ranks of the empire’s merchant marine, she’s finally become first lieutenant on an interstellar cargo vessel. When her captain dies under suspicious circumstances, Virika is arrested for murder and charged with treason despite her lifelong loyalty to the empire. Her conviction and subsequent imprisonment set her on a path of revenge, determined to take down the evil empire that wronged her, all while the fate of her people hangs in the balance. Please note that this SFRG will be meeting on the second Monday of the month!
