Perseid Meteor Shower Date When Event Occurs : The date varies. The annual Persied Meteor Shower is visible, weather permitting, from mid July through late August. The peak is usually between August 9 - 14.There it is in black and white, in all of its fiery glory. Whatever you do, do not blink! If you do, you will miss the meteor, as it flames across the night sky. It's absolutely amazing what a little piece of dust can do when is enters the earth's atmosphere travelling at 160,000 miles per hour. Meteors are seen as the earth passes through the orbit trail of a comet. As the comet streaks through the heavens, it sheds dust and small debris. When this debris enters the earth's orbit, friction from the upper atmosphere burns up the meteorite, resulting in a streak of light quickly blazing across the night sky. The brightness and longevity of the light, is a function of the size of the meteor, how near it is to you (don't worry, it's thousands of miles away), and how dark the evening is.The annual Perseid Meteor Shower is one of he brightest, numerous and long lasting of all the meteor showers. Best of all, it occurs each year in August, at a time when the viewing weather is warm, most days and nights are cloudless. Many people are on vacation in August, allowing them to stay up all night to enjoy the show. The number of meteors you see, is dependent upon how dark of a location you watch from, and the number of expected meteors. This number can vary significantly from just a few to hundred per hour. On a good, moonless night, 60 - 100 meteors per hour are likely.Did You Know? Meteorites are also called a "Shooting Star" or "Fallen Star". Since ancient times, seeing a shooting star was a sign of good luck to come. When and How to Watch for the Perseid MeteorsWatching the meteor shower on the peak night, usually results in the most and brightest displays.If the peak evening is cloudy, select a date as near to the peak as possible.The best time to view the Perseid Meteor Shower, is between midnight and pre-dawn hours.Go to the darkest location you can find, away from city or town lights, street lights, etc. The darker, the better.Once you have arrived at the viewing site you selected, look up into the night sky.For comfort, and to avoid neck strain, use a recliner. Importantly, don't forget a coat and a blanket. The early morning hours in August can become chilly.Your fun evening under the stars, is best enjoyed with others.

Citing social, civil and religious issues, the group planned a women's rights convention, one that included the right to vote. But the journey to the vote for women would take another 70 years.Helena Mickie is the Director of the Program for the Study of Women and Gender at Rice University. She says that young people today can't imagine a time when women were not fully enfranchised.Texas led the Southern states in ratifying the nineteenth amendment in 1920. Ruth Jones McClendon is a state representative from San Antonio and author of a recent bill that recognizes today as Women's Independence Day. Although it was a long struggle with many set-backs, she says many Texas women take the right to vote for granted.In addition to commemorating the vote for women, Women's Independence Day also acts as a benchmark for continuing efforts towards full equality for women. Professor Mickie says this is only the beginning in a larger discussion of women's rights.

In 1965 the "Great Society" program became the agenda for Congress:Aid to education.Protection of civil rights (including the right to vote).Urban renewal.Medicare.Conservation and beautification.Control and prevention of crime and delinquency.Promotion of the arts.Consumer protection.Johnson was also known for escalating the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War which was opposed by many Americans.After leaving the presidency in 1969 Johnson returned to Johnson City Texas. During his retirement he wrote his memoirs called The Vantage Point taught students and participated in a series of national symposia on the critical issues of modern America. Johnson died at his ranch on January 22 1973 and is buried in the family cemetery at the LBJ Ranch near his birthplace. Shortly after his death the Texas State Legislature created a legal state holiday to be observed every year on August 27 to honor Johnson.
