\ \ \ \ \ “中文游乐园-Chinese Learning Playground” is a Mandarin Chinese study group for school-age children. This program is led by volunteer native-Chinese-speaking parents, and teaches Chinese through an immersive setting to two tiers of learners — Advanced and Junior. The Advanced group meets from 2:30 to 3:30pm, and is suitable for students already fluent in basic reading in Chinese. This school year, we are following the 6th-grade textbook 《中文》from Heritage Chinese. The Junior group meets from 3:30pm to 4:30pm, and typically hosts kids in elementary grades. This school year, we have started the 3rd-grade textbook 《中文》from Heritage Chinese. The lessons sometimes incorporate games, crafts, and puzzles to keep the learning fun and engaging. 中文游乐园-Chinese learning playground is currently organized by three volunteer parents: Xiaoqing Zhu, a research scientist working on video coding and streaming, who loves to recite Chinese poetry along with her daughter. Nan Jiang, a Ph.D. from UT Austin and the Data Science Practice Lead at her firm, has always been passionate about helping people, especially her kids, to understand and appreciate the rich Chinese culture and history, including its difficult-to-learn but fascinating language. Qiong Zeng, a data scientist on health fitness, mobile games and automobiles, has two daughters and enjoys teaching kids Chinese and about Chinese culture. Our weekly sessions are taught in rotation by a small group of like-minded parent volunteers.

\ \ \ \ \ Mixed Media This is a chance to learn the mediums of pastel and acrylics and how to use them together to create unique paintings. Participants will experiment with each medium separately and in combination, working with the principles of design and color harmony. Beginners and more experienced artists are welcome. Sherry Fields began painting when she was in high school and went on to receive degrees in studio art and art history from The University of Texas. She generally works in pastels, oil, or acrylics, although she occasionally returns to watercolor, clay, or printmaking. Generally an abstract painter, at times she creates work that is impressionistic or representational, sometimes overlapping styles and mixing media. She enjoys the element of mystery in an abstract painting and likes the viewer to bring their own ideas and interpretation to the work. She has taught privately and in public schools, universities, and art museums, and has also worked as a graphic artist. One of the experiences she is proudest of is her time as an Artist in Residence with the State of Texas. Sherry’s work is held in private and corporate collections. She has shown in several galleries and participated in numerous shows. She has won awards for her paintings in several national exhibits and was a featured artist in the December 2021 issue of the International Artist Magazine.

Unlike other physical forms of yoga that use still or slow yoga postures, Laughter Yoga is like kindergarten recess for adults, with lots of eye contact, high energy, movement, and an atmosphere filled with child-like playfulness. We bring joy to the body through lots of laughter, silliness, and deep inhalation and exhalation, which increase the net supply of oxygen to our body and our brain. Participants of all ages will leave with a few techniques they can begin using immediately to feel energetic, more relaxed, and able to transform frustrations into happy, endorphin filled meditative experiences through Laughter Yoga.

Join us in virtual conversation with storyteller and popular blogger Ted Page as we chat about his book Good Grandpa: Stories from the Heart of Grandfatherhood. This heartfelt book highlights his journey to bring together the stories and wisdom of grandfathers from all walks of life—all with a mission to nurture the next great generation. When author Ted Page found out he was going to be a grandpa, he did a web search to learn more about the experience in store for him, but all he could find were references to the movie Bad Grandpa. He couldn’t help but wonder, “Where are the good ones?” Page started a blog, GoodGrandpa.com, and set out to talk with grandfathers across a diverse spectrum.
