Mental Health MorningsApril 4, 9-10 AMRoger Williams Park Botanical CenterJoin us for an hour of calm in the magical space of the Botanical Center with a relaxed session guided by heath expert Sandra Victorino, presented by the Roger Williams Park Conservancy. REGISTER ONLINE. Tickets are free but required in order to keep the group to a reasonable size (limit 15). The session runs one hour additional time spent in Botanical Center is encouraged but requires purchasing a ticket in person or online. Sandra Victorino has a private practice and is co-founder of the Latino Mental Health Network of Rhode Island. She has worked in the mental health field for 17 years. Her areas of interest in health care are access for all populations, health and mental health equity, and culturally and linguistically appropriate health services. In addition, her current work focuses on building leadership capabilities, diversity and inclusion, and developing and strengthening partnerships in our communities.

Free Monthly Soil TestingApril 4, May 2, June 6, September 5, October 3 from 10 AM-1 PMDuring (Free) First Saturdays at the Botanical Center in Roger Williams ParkWe’re excited to partner with URI’s Master Gardener program to provide free pH testing again this season. Testing your soil is a good way to learn more about the dirt under your feet. Healthier soil means healthier plants, which you really want to focus on when planting fruit and vegetable gardens. (We’re looking at you community garden plots!) In city environments, it’s especially important to know whether you have toxins in your yard before planting anything edible. High toxin levels are fairly common in our neighborhoods due to Providence’s industrial history, but we can work together to improve soil health! To collect your soil sample: Get a small clean shovel and a container.Determine the area you want to test. Dig at least 6 inches down and place soil in your bag.Collect soil from several spots and mix it all together.Dry the soil sample. Spread the soil out on newspaper or a paper plate.Remove any stones, roots, and other debris.Finally, put about one (1) cup of the dry, mixed soil into a clean plastic or paper bag. Label it so you know where it came from!Bring it in. We’ll test the pH on site, evaluate texture, and give you recommendations to improve it.2026 Soil Testing Schedule at the Botanical Center: *Every (Free) First Saturday from 10am-1pm. Admission is free for Providence Residents every first Saturday of the month. Soil testing season at the Botanical Center takes place March through October. *No Soil Testing in July or August

Drawing Wild From the CollectionThe following Mondays, 1-4 PM:January 5, February 2, March 2, April 6 & May 4RWP Museum of Natural History and PlanetariumYou will have the opportunity to discover, or rediscover, the fascinating collections during this private program exploring the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium in Roger Williams Park. Bring a small easel or chair and your drawing or painting materials, and choose your subject from the collections of birds, bears, lions, and Oceanic artifacts. Museum staff will also select some special “guests” from the museum vaults to display. During the program, the instructor will circulate for those who wish feedback, and at the end of the session, attendees will gather to view and discuss each other’s work. Museum is closed to the public during this program. Program fee: $35 per adult/ $30 for museum members. Pre-registration required.   Permitted Materials: You may bring the medium of your choice — charcoal pencils, graphite, colored pencils, pastels, or watercolor (please, no oils or acrylics).  All skill levels are welcome to participate, high school age and older. Capacity is limited, so sign up early to guarantee your spot. INSTRUCTOR:KATHY HODGE: Kathy Hodge attended RISD and has a BFA in painting from Swain School of Design. She has been working in oils and charcoal for over 30 years, has exhibited widely and was awarded the 2017 Fellowship in Painting from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. Kathy has long taken inspiration from the natural world in her landscape paintings and was appointed Artist in Residence in thirteen of our National Parks and Forests. She first discovered the museum collections when taking a museum class and she is very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to draw from the collections.
