May 23 – July 25th, 2024Thursdays, 5:30-8:30pm Application Deadline May 17th! CHWARI is excited to offer this training in Public Health to Rhode Island CHWs! This training is for Rhode Island certified CHWs only (or those currently in the process of applying). Community Health Workers will: Acquire a deeper understanding of the areas of public health and relationships between health of individuals, organized entities, and systems.Gain the skills necessary to advocate for systems-level change towards improving public health in RI.Have a working knowledge of RI Public Health infrastructure and how the CHW role fits into it.Understand career/educational options in public health and the skills and educational opportunities necessary to advance and be successfully employed in these areas.Understand how individuals are impacted from systemic racism and social determinants of health where they live, learn, work and play.Training Modules Include: The CHW Role in Public HealthThe Impact of Place on HealthEssential Skills and Knowledge Base (two modules)Public Health PolicyRI Public Health InfrastructureCHW Careers in Public HealthUsing Case Study (or, Storytelling)Final Presentations & DebriefEarn 30 hours towards your CHW Certification! The virtual Public Health Training will host Zoom classes on Thursdays, 5:30pm – 8:30pm, May 23 – July 25, with an in-person final class at Rhode Island College on that final Thursday the 25th. (NOTE: there will be an assignment due before class begins — what we call “pre-work” — on May 23rd. This will be emailed to you the week before.) There will be 23 hours of in-class time and approximately 7 hours of assignments to be completed in non-class time. Attendance is required at all class sessions. Overview: This support group is designed specifically for community health workers (CHWs) with justice involvement experience, providing a safe space to share challenges, receive support, and enhance skills. Meetings will occur twice a month and will focus on topics related to professional development, self-care, and navigating reentry into the workforce. The Justice-Involved Community Health Worker Support Group curriculum aims to provide CHWs with justice involvement experience a supportive environment to enhance their skills, build resilience, and navigate the reentry process successfully. Through interactive sessions, peer support, and access to resources, participants will gain valuable tools and insights to thrive in their professional roles and contribute positively to their communities’ health and well-being. Meetings will be focused on topics including: Setting GoalsNavigating Reentry ChallengesBuilding resiliance and coping skillsEffective communication and conflict resolutionProfessional Development and Skill EnhancementAdvocacy and Community EngagementLegal Rights & ResourcesCelebrating Progress and Looking AheadMeeting Frequency: Twice a month. The initial schedule will be every other Thursday at 7pm: April 25th, May 9th, May 23rd, June 6th. You will learn about housing resources, challenges, partnering opportunities, advocacy, and employment of CHWs in the sector. The curriculum was developed by a subject matter expert at Haus of Codec in collaboration with CHWARI at RIC. It will be presented by Julio E. Berroa (He/Xe, They), Haus of Codec Executive Director. Completers will obtain a certificate of completion from CHWARI. Five SEPARATE, standalone trainings are being offered. Please sign up only for the one, and only one, you wish to attend.
