Paint your way through Girty’s Woods  Mile by mile, volunteers have been building and maintaining Girty’s Woods’ network of hiking trails. It’s time to paint! Volunteers will hike together painting blazes on trees and install painted stakes in areas where there aren’t ideal trees to blaze. We need folks who are willing and able to work as a team and carry heavy wooden stakes through the woods for up to five miles. Together, we’ll ensure that explorers stay the course in Girty’s Woods. Registration is required to participate, and volunteers must arrive on time. Long pants and close-toed shoes are required. Long sleeves and a hat are recommended to protect from sun and bugs. Tools and gloves will be provided, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own gear if they prefer. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Water and light snacks will be available. Please bring a full water bottle and consider packing a picnic to make a day of it! Registrants will receive a follow-up email with more details.   Registration

This $2+ million investment will install a new AMD treatment system to improve the health of Chalfant Run. On this walk, attendees will gather pre-project baseline photos and water quality test results, which will help measure the success of the project once it is completed. Join ALT’s Field Coordinator and Sycamore Island’s Lead Steward for a day of care and restoration. Sycamore Island is a beautiful success story of conservation and restoration, and the story continues! Volunteers are invited to join us on the island to help manage invasive Asiatic Bittersweet while we manage Giant Knotweed elsewhere on the island. Learn a bit about the story of Sycamore Island and how ALT manages different species of invasive plants. The campsite will be reserved for any participants who wish to stay and make an adventure of it! Participants must provide their own watercraft and PFD to access Sycamore Island. Registration is required to participate, and volunteers must arrive on time. Long pants and close-toed shoes are required. Long sleeves and a hat are recommended to protect from sun and bugs. Join ALT staff and WPMC Identifier, Julie Travaglini, for a beginner’s mushroom walk at Girty’s Woods, as part of the Outdoor Inclusion Coalition’s TRY IT! Series. This is not a traditional guided hike. After an introduction, participants will search for our fungal friends to collect for a beginner friendly identification table at the end of the program. Hike runs rain or shine. NO WALK-INS will be permitted. We will not be foraging on this hike or discussing edibility. Foraging for mushrooms can be risky and it is never safe to eat a wild mushroom unless an expert confirms the identity. Specific parking instructions will be included in your reminder email the week of the event. Please do not park along Irwin Lane! The gate will be open for you to park inside the property lines. Join ALT staff and Western PA Mushroom Club Identifiers and Mycologists in collecting eDNA for research! eDNA, or environmental DNA, is a way for us to learn about the fungus that resides in the soil that may never produce a fruiting body, aka a mushroom. Recently, WPMC received a grant to complete sampling and eDNA work around the region to learn more about the fungus growing beneath our feet. This will not be a traditional guided hike. After the eDNA portion, attendees will be off on their own to search for fungi and slime molds to bring back to an identification table at the end. We’ll then learn about the fascinating fungi that everyone found! Hike runs rain or shine, NO WALK INS will be permitted. We will not be foraging on this hike or discussing edibility.
