We're partnering with the Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area to offer an "Outdoor Adventure" Train to Carbondale! Cyclists can bring their own bicycle and ride the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail from Carbondale to Olyphant, approximately 11 miles. The train will bring you and your bike from Steamtown National Historic Site (NHS) to Carbondale, dropping you off at the train station. Cyclists will then ride the scenic Lackawanna River Heritage Trail for 11 miles to Olyphant, where they will meet the train for a return trip to Steamtown NHS.NOTICE: Bike tickets are limited to the first 30 cyclists!Carbondale Station Description and Details:History: Carbondale’s present-day train station was built on the site of the Delaware and Hudson Seventh Avenue train station that was opened on February 1, 1896. Local and express trains, both north and south, from Carbondale arrived and departed from Carbondale on a daily basis. In the 1950s, as many as fifteen passenger trains departed daily from this station for Scranton. Amenities: There are limited amenities available at this site for the Outdoor Excursion.  Participants should plan ahead and be prepared with a sufficient water supply.

We're partnering with the Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area (LHVA) to offer an "Outdoor Adventure" Train to Archbald! Walkers will traverse the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail from Archbald to Olyphant approximately 4 miles. The train will bring you from Steamtown National Historic Site (NHS) to Archbald dropping you off at the LHVA trailhead. Walkers will then walk the scenic Lackawanna River Heritage Trail with LHVA guides for 4 miles to Olyphant where they will meet the train for a return trip to Steamtown NHS.Archbald Station Description and Details:History: A highlight of the former Delaware & Hudson Railroad’s Penn Division and its predecessor the Gravity Railroad. An engineering marvel of its day for seventy years the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company’s Gravity Railroad moved anthracite coal from mines in the Lackawanna Valley to awaiting barges in Honesdale PA. From Honesdale this critical commodity was carried via canal to the Hudson River ultimately making its way to New York City and other points. Anthracite coal helped fuel the American Industrial Revolution and provided an affordable and dependable heat source for the growing populations throughout the NYC metro.Amenities: There are limited amenities available at this site for the Outdoor Excursion.  Participants should plan ahead and be prepared with a sufficient water supply.

Celebrate the area’s industrial heritage with the return of Steamtown National Historic Site’s Railfest and Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum’s Arts on Fire on Saturday, June 17, 2023.  Both sites are excited to be collaborating to provide an interactive experience showcasing our community’s history. In addition to free admission, there will be no cost for Steamtown’s short train rides. A complimentary shuttle service will be available throughout the day to transport visitors between Steamtown NHS and the Scranton Iron Furnaces.Steamtown’s Railfest event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Programming will be offered throughout the day, including our short train rides, the Scranton Limited yard shuttle and the Caboose Hop experience, cab tours of the Union Pacific 4012 and Canadian Pacific 2317, tours of Mattes St. Tower, demonstrations within the locomotive shop, “Ring of Fire” demonstrations, and a Junior Ranger scavenger hunt activity. Several community partners will be in attendance as well.Anthracite Heritage Museum’s Arts on Fire will take place at the Scranton Iron Furnaces from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. with a ceremonial lighting of the furnace and will feature arts demonstrations, food trucks, live music, and the return of Hot Metal to the furnaces.  Artist and sculpture professor Brian Glaze will fire up his cupola furnace and melt iron.  Scratch blocks will be available for your artistic expressions in cast iron.Stay informed by visiting www.nps.gov/stea or @SteamtownNHS on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Board a train this summer to enjoy the recently renovated Cresco Station.  Visitors to the site will be able to enjoy the Cresco Station Museum and Library a display of antique cars (weather permitting) entertainment and food.Cresco Station Description and DetailsThe Barrett Township Historical Society maintains the Cresco Station Museum and the Library Research Center buildings providing many displays and exhibits that not only help preserve these items of the history of the area but also tell the stories of the communities past. History: Cresco Station was built by the Delaware Lackawanna and Western (DL& W) Railroad in the 1870s reaching its peak in the 1940s. Today the Museum and Library offer a host of vintage antiques and displays. The Library and Research Center is a one-story Art Deco style structure opposite the Cresco Station Museum. The building was built in 1928 and originally served as a Post Office. Later the building found use as a soda fountain a popular stop for incoming and outgoing passengers on the DL& W Railroad. Today the Historical Society houses the Barrett Township archives from 1859 to present and maintains a rotating exhibit of artifacts. Amenities: The Station and Museum includes tables and chairs tents and restrooms. The Library Research Center is air-conditioned has a bathroom kitchen Wifi access computer copier parking and a slate covered courtyard for outdoor venues. The Barrett Township Historical Society will be selling hot dogs chips drinks and ice cream.
