Family Explorers: What Lives at the Arboretum?

FOR ALL AGES Looking to spark your child’s curiosity about the outdoors? Join us for Family Explorers: What Lives at the Arboretum? This program invites families to explore nature using their senses to uncover its secrets. Each month, we’ll head outdoors to discover a different seasonal theme, searching for plants, animals, and other natural wonders that bring the Arboretum to life. Using simple tools like magnifying glasses or binoculars, we’ll take a closer look at our discoveries. Each child will receive a Tyler journal to document discoveries, with time at the end to reflect, draw, or write about what we’ve found. Bring your journal to future Family Explorers tours to capture all the amazing moments of the season. Let’s see what we can discover together! About your guide: Barbara Frank is a PA Master Naturalist, a Tyler-trained docent, a yoga teacher, an artist, and a true lover of nature in all of its manifestations. She leads tours for children and adults. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED This program is best suited for elementary school children accompanied by adults however, families and siblings of all ages are welcome. Check in at the Visitor Center, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk on the Tyler trails, sturdy shoes are suggested. PLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on some of our trails. If you plan to bring an infant or young child, we recommend a carrier. Weather or other factors may adjust the day’s topic, but nature will always shine through! In the event of inclement weather, the tour will be held indoors. MEMBERS: FREE (Remember to sign into your member account before continuing for your discounts) NON-MEMBERS: $18 per adult, $10 per child ages 3-17 children ages two and under are free and do not need to register. The non-member fee includes admission, so please feel free to stay for the day! GUEST PASS HOLDERS: For non-members only. FREE. Please submit your guest pass to the Visitor Center at check-in. If you are a guest accompanying a family-level or higher member, please inform the Visitor Center Associate. A registered adult must accompany any child ages 17 and under. REGISTER HERE

Winter Gardening: Seed Starting for Pollinators

FOR ADULTS AND TEENS (AGES 15-17) Learn from the experts! Winter sowing is a simple, efficient, and inexpensive way to add plants to your garden. You don’t need a lot of space or grow lights to grow hardy seedlings in containers outside. Discover the joy of supporting pollinators while creating a more sustainable garden in this hands-on workshop led by Tyler Arboretum’s Pollinator Preserve Coordinator, Nancy Heinbaugh. Learn about the native plants that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and which species serve as essential host plants for butterflies. With step-by-step guidance, you’ll transform a simple gallon container into a native seed planter to take home, along with tips on how to nurture your seedlings and prepare them for spring transplanting. What to bring: A clean, transparent, or semi-transparent gallon milk or water jug. All other materials—soil, seeds, and detailed instructions—will be provided. Many of the seeds are collected from our Pollinator Preserve and include native species that are difficult to find in nurseries. Where to meet: Check in at the Visitor Center, then enjoy a short, 5-minute walk to the Edible Garden Classroom. Please arrive early to allow time for the walk. Join us and take this first step toward creating a pollinator-friendly garden while learning from an expert in the field. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED MEMBERS (remember to sign in for your discount!): Save 15%! Adults & Teens (ages 15-17): $21.25 per person. A registered adult must accompany all teens.
