HPGA Compass Camp

Explore how drones, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and field ecology are used in real-world research, led by Mountie professors from the Science & Math and History, Politics, & Geographic Analysis (HPGA) departments!July 8-9, 2026 Drone and GIS-Assisted Biodiversity Analysis is a two-day immersive STEM summer camp for high school students in grades 10–12. Hosted on the Mount Aloysius College campus, students will work alongside faculty to explore how drones, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and field ecology are used in real-world scientific research to perform a suitability study for the northern flying squirrel. Through this interdisciplinary, inquiry-based experience, students will gain authentic research skills, collaborate with peers and faculty, and connect classroom science to cutting-edge environmental problem-solving. On day one, participants will observe drone flight techniques and analyze GIS data to identify field study sites to assess habitat suitability for Pennsylvania’s endangered northern flying squirrel. On day two, students will explore how history, politics, and geography shape the world around us lead by the History, Politics, and Geographic Analysis (HPGA) faculty. During day two, through hands-on activities, simulations, case studies, games, and discussions, students will develop an understanding of the social sciences and how they foster cultural awareness, and build critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address local and global challenges. The camp will conclude with geocaching on the Mount Aloysius College campus under faculty supervision. Students will learn first-hand how to use navigational devices and resources to search for information, clues, and more, gaining practical experience and skills in global positioning systems (GPS), critical thinking, environmental stewardship, and teamwork. Mount Aloysius College Community Night at the Altoona Curve 2026

Join us for an evening of fun in Curve, PA!Join us on Thursday, July 9, 2026, to see the Altoona Curve take on the Richmond Flying Squirrels! In addition to the game, we will be hosting a pre-game picnic within the stadium, along the first base line. The picnic will run from 5:00-6:00 PM, and the game will begin at 6:00 PM. This event is for the entire Mount Aloysius Community, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and their friends and family. It is proudly sponsored by the Mount Aloysius Alumni Executive Board and the Office of People & Mission. Date: Thursday, July 9, 2026Game Time: 6:00 PMPre-Game Buffet: 5:00 – 6:00 PMLocation: Peoples Natural Gas Field, 1000 Park Ave, Altoona, PA 16602 REGISTRATION TICKETSTickets can be picked up the evening of the game at the Ticket Booth directly outside of Peoples Natural Gas Field. Please let the Curve staff member know you are with Mount Aloysius College and provide the name of the person who completed the registration form. PARKINGThere are two parking areas at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The parking lot directly in front of the stadium is reserved for VIP/Season Ticket holders and people who require special assistance. All other fans can park in the parking garage located beyond left field on Park Ave for $4 per game. All parking is cash only. GROUP LOCATION & PICNICBefore the game, we will provide a free picnic buffet for our group along the first baseline on the main concourse level. You will see “Mount Aloysius College” signs placed on picnic tables for our group. Food will include hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and soft drinks. The buffet will only be open from 5:00-6:00 PM. At 6:00 PM, the buffet will close so that other guests can use the location to enjoy the game. We also encourage you to wear your Mountie gear to show your support of the College!
