Need to get some community service hours for school or scholarships?Come to the Middletown Free Library from 6:15-8:15PM on select Mondays and help out! Students MUST REGISTER beforehand as space is limited. We cannot accommodate students on the Waitlist at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience, but you may only volunteer if you are fully registered. (Students on the Waitlist may NOT volunteer. If you are waitlisted you must wait and see if you get an email indicating that you have come off the waitlist, and onto the fully registered list.) Check in at the Main Circulation Desk and ask for Miss Libby. Tasks involved may include:-organizing and cleaning up materials for children's programs,-shelf-straightening books,-spraying and wiping tables, -sweeping throughout the library,-crafting scavenger hunt and decorative displays for the Children's Area, and more. No Cell Phone Usage during volunteering time. All volunteers are expected to respect library and volunteering rules and directions, such as following directions, being polite, and maintaining a quiet atmosphere in the library. Due to safety concerns, if volunteers cannot adhere to library rules and follow directions, they will be dismissed from volunteering and will not receive a volunteer verification letter. Teens only, ages 13-17. As a reminder, all volunteers aged 18 and up MUST have volunteer clearance paperwork. We cannot accept volunteers who are aged 18 and over who do not have volunteer clearance paperwork. Attendance Standard: If a participant signs up and is a no-show, then they will be removed from a future MFL registered program. If a participant cannot follow the safety rules and directions of the teen volunteering program, then they will be removed from a future registered teen volunteering program. Come and join the Youth Dance Club at Yeadon Public Library! For youth in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. We will explore different styles of dance, including African, hip hop, modern, liturgical/praise, step, and much more. This session will last from Monday, January 5 until Thursday, April 16. There will be two performances: Saturday, February 21 and Thursday, April 16. Stitches of History is a special Black History Month program for children that combines cultural learning with hands-on creativity. Participants are introduced to the history and meaning of Kente cloth, a traditional woven textile from Ghana that symbolizes values such as wisdom, unity, creativity, and leadership. Through an age-appropriate discussion and visuals, children learn how colors and patterns in Kente cloth tell stories and represent important ideas in African and African American history.After the history portion, children take part in a basic hand-sewing activity, using pre-cut Kente-inspired fabric to create a simple pouch. Librarians demonstrate beginner sewing techniques such as threading a needle, tying knots, and using a running stitch. The project is designed for beginners and focuses on patience, fine motor skills, and pride in creating something by hand.

Dr. Joe Lex, author of All Bones Considered: 52 Laurel Hill WomenTuesday, 2/17/26 6:30pm-8:00pmWinsor Room, Radnor Memorial LibraryIn Partnership with Radnor Historical Society Joe Lex is the author of All Bones Considered: 52 Laurel Hill Women - biographical sketches of 52 women of Laurel Hill East and Laurel Hill West. In his new book, Lex tells the amazing stories of more than 50 women whose final resting place is two cemeteries in Philadelphia. Laurel Hill Cemetery was founded in 1836 as a nonsectarian alternative to Philadelphiaâs crowded churchyards. While some of the women buried there are âhidden figuresâ such as mathematicians or engineers, some are political figures or chose medicine. Lex will talk about these women, among them civil rights activist C. Delores Tucker, Sadie T. M. Alexander who was the first Black woman in America to earn a PhD in economics and then attend law school. The city of Philadelphia is in the process of erecting a statue for Alexander that will be installed in Thomas Paine Plaza. Founding Mother Esther de Berdt Reedâs status in the colonies at the time of her death was second only to Martha Washington. Brought up in Haverford, Catherine Drinker Bowen is the author of the classic history of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Miracle at Philadelphia, a book that vividly details the debates, compromises, and personalities of the delegates who drafted the Constitution. Dr. Lex retired after 45 years in emergency medicine. His career began as a combat medic in Vietnam -later in life working as a registered nurse before starting medical school. He spent 14 years as an ER doctor, then 13 years teaching at Temple University where he retired as a professor. Because Joe missed research and teaching, he began volunteering as a tour guide at Laurel Hill Cemetery. In 2024, Joe adapted some podcast scripts into All Bones Considered: 52 Laurel Hill Women, highlighting remarkable women who shaped Philadelphia and the world.
