Learn how to create depth and atmosphere in an acrylic landscape by using a variety of green tones to distinguish distant backgrounds, a middle ground, and a strong foreground. This class will explore techniques for building a sense of space and bringing a scene to life through color and composition. Our subject is the beloved Swing Tree along Crum Creek on Yale Avenue. For many years, local children enjoyed swinging from a rope attached to the long, slanted branch of this iconic sycamore tree that grew along the creek bank. Although that famous branch is no longer there, its memory lives on in this charming and picturesque scene. Join us as we capture the beauty and nostalgia of this local landmark in acrylic paint, creating a lasting tribute to a treasured piece of community history. More Information

During the late 1950s, a group of 26 African American artists became known as the The Florida Highwaymen. Traveling along Florida’s East Coast highways, they sold their vibrant landscape paintings wherever they could—along roadsides, in parking lots, and by going door-to-door to local businesses. Despite facing racial barriers of the era, they were remarkably prolific and built successful careers selling their artwork for about $20 per painting. Today, their works are highly sought after and can be worth thousands of dollars, making them an important part of Florida’s artistic and cultural history. This class pays tribute to their distinctive style and lasting legacy while giving participants the opportunity to create their own Highwaymen-inspired landscape painting. All supplies are included. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world-famous singer Tito Merelli, known as Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as the star of the opera. Tito arrives late, and through a hilarious series of mishaps, he is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead – and in a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Merelli’s costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds and lives up to his idol, but Merelli regains consciousness and gets into the identical costume, ready to perform. Now two opera singers are running around in the same costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, this madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter. The Delaware County Symphony Chamber Series opens its season on Sunday, October 4 at 3:00 PM with A Classical Delco Arts Week Chamber Concert, featuring music by some of the great composers of the classical tradition, along with a new work by local composer and musician Joseph Lorini. The program begins with Bach’s Prélude in D Major for violin, followed by Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 and Boccherini’s String Quintet, Op. 30, No. 6. The concert concludes with Hymn for America, a new work by Lorini, a local musician, composer, and arranger. Arranged for violin, cello, piano, and baritone voice, the piece celebrates America and the nation’s semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Students can bring their own creative ideas then make those ideas come to life with the guidance of our teaching artist. This is a great class to work on portfolio development, or just expand skills and knowledge. Our teaching artist can also provide suggestions and ideas to get started, and demonstrate drawing and painting techniques. We’ll use 2D materials like paint, artist pencils, paper, pastels, markers, more! Students can attend any classes that fit in their schedule, or register for all classes in this session.
