Beginning in San Juan, and making a loop around this rectangular island, we seek not just the eighteen or so endemic birds, but also a greater understanding and appreciation of an island that is so much a part of the United States, yet geographically remote from most of us. Winding our way through the karst limestone forested region of the northern part of the island and their haystack hills and “mogotes”, we also visit the coastal lowlands and spend significant time in the highlands. In addition to endemics like the super snazzy Puerto Rican Woodpecker, the critically endangered Puerto Rican Parrot, and the cryptic Puerto Rican Nightjar, there are regional specials as well, like West Indian Whistling-Duck, Key West Quail-Dove, Antillean Crested Hummingbird, and still others. There aren’t many countries where you can hope to see all the endemic birds in about a week, especially while birding at a fairly relaxed pace. But then they don’t call it “The Island of Enchantment” for nothing. Join us for a quick getaway, and see some tantalizing tropical birds, all while still on US soil.
