Our Dance-A-Thon is a Gilmore Girls inspired event with a tropical theme, where any student can come in and dance until a PPGA executive leaders (there are five of us) catch them not moving/dancing. This is a free event for anyone to attend, and we will offer free dinner. This event will serve as a fundraiser to raise money for local sleep centers and the YWCA to get period products. We have this fundraiser every year (although it's usually not an event), and we call it our Period Power Fundraiser. The Dance-a-thon will consist of Whitman bands playing while people dance, and the last three winners to stay on the dance floor win a prize. While the dancing is going on, we will also have a raffle, where people can be entered into the raffle by buying a $5 ticket (this is the money we will use to purchase period products). At the end of the event, we will announce the winners of the raffle. Winners will receive a gift card to local vendors who have already donated gift cards for this cause. On Monday, December 8, Ben Vernasco, Research Scientist & Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology at Whitman College will discuss how Earth’s biodiversity is currently being transformed by the dramatic changes humans are imposing on the natural world. Passive acoustic monitoring is an emerging field of study that combines simple technologies, rapidly developing neural networks, and quantitative methodologies to measure soundscapes across broad geographic areas and document such changes in ecosystems around the world. In this talk, Professor Vernasco will share his collaborative efforts that combine passive acoustic monitoring, neural networks, remote sensing, and Bayesian hierarchical models to provide an unprecedented level of detail about the bird communities of the Blue Mountains. He will highlight how two ecologically contrasting woodpeckers—one thriving in dense, fire-suppressed forests and the other dependent on large, fire-maintained pines—reveal the legacy effects of nearly a century of timber harvest and fire suppression.

Please join us for an in-person screening and informal discussion of the Archaeology Hour talk by Alison Futrell (University of Arizona). In ancient-Roman ‘arenas’ — structures and spaces like the Colosseum in Rome — mass events were staged that exaggerated, aestheticized, and then normalized extreme and shocking forms of violence, deploying a twisted, voyeuristic ‘pleasure’ intended to be derived from unreal genres of amplified bloodshed and death reserved *only* for those presented as variously criminal, exotic/strange, non-human and/or lesser-human… and fully disposable. This presentation will ask: how did the arena impact the lives of ordinary individuals… in the sands, the seats, and the substructures, beyond the emperor’s box?

In connection to the virtual public talk by the Indigenous Kichwa leader Zoila Castillo from Ecuador’s rainforest, titled “Weaving the Anti-Extractive Struggle in the Amazon,” there will be a second opportunity to learn from these leader's political work during the opening of the exhibition of her art in clay, seeds and beads at Stevens Gallery (Reid) on Thursday, December 11, at 5pm (snacks will be provided). Besides being an important political leader from Ecuador’s Indigenous Movement, Zoila is one of the most well-known and experienced maestra de artesanías (handicrafts master) in Ecuador. Though her art, Zoila has been able to not only provide for her family, but also to sustain her political work. The exhibition honors Zoila’s life-long political work and art, and is also intended to support her anti-extractive struggle. The selling of her art will go directly to her and her family. This event have been made possible by the Politics Department, and Kynde Kiefel and Emily Nichols from the Stevens Gallery.
