All School and District Offices Closed 8am - 12pm Theme:  Citizen â Use Your Gifts to Make a Difference | CommUNITY Quests Students become active CITIZENS, using their time, talents, and compassion to positively impact their community, family, and world. This Journey Day emphasizes service, empathy, and connection. Whether itâs writing letters of gratitude, solving a local problem, or contributing to a community project, students discover the power of contribution. Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, Mason City Schools will launch Journey Days, replacing what has previously been known as Personal Learning Days. These dedicated daysâSeptember 26, November 21, February 13, and March 13âare designed to spark student curiosity, enhance personal growth, and provide meaningful, purposeful learning experiences beyond the classroom. Why the Change? Listening to Our Families This change is grounded in the candid and constructive feedback we received from families during our community conversations. Many expressed that the current Personal Learning Days often felt undefined, and that the burden of planning meaningful activities typically fell to them without enough guidance or support. We also heard that for many working families, it can be difficult to coordinate learning activities on the specific dates designated in the calendar.  We heard youâand weâre responding with a reimagined experience that brings clarity, flexibility, equity, and purpose to these important days. We aim to make the experience both meaningful and manageable for all families.   What Families Can Expect Journey Days will offer a wide variety of activities tailored to different grade levels, interests, and learning styles. Hereâs a preview of whatâs coming: Career Exploration and Job Shadowing: Weâll invite families and community partners to help us offer career-based learning opportunities. If you or someone you know is interested in participating, weâll share more details in May. Service Projects: Students may choose to give back through community service initiatives with student clubs, local nonprofits, or service organizations, or faith-based groups - supporting neighbors, enhancing public spaces, or volunteering with programs like the Comet Cupboard.  Enrichment Activities On-Site or Off-Site: Students can participate in hands-on learning, art, STEM, wellness activities, or college/career readiness workshops or visits either in our schools or through approved community organizations. Flexible Scheduling: Weâre designing Journey Days with flexibility so families can tailor experiences around their schedules. Students will have access to a menu of opportunities and resources they can engage with either on the designated day or within a broader timeframe.  Whatâs Next? We Need You! To make Journey Days a success, we need the entire Comet CommUNITY. This parent-only meeting will provide an overview of what families can expect in Mason kindergarten, including daily schedules, developmental readiness, registration requirements, and next steps for enrollment. Families will also have the opportunity to learn more about how Mason supports young learners socially, emotionally, and academically as they begin their school journey. Families who attend will receive a FREE âClass of 2039 Comet Kidâ yard sign to celebrate their incoming kindergartener and proudly welcome them to the Comet family.

MCS Diversity Council is partnering with the Mason Schools Foundation, MECC PTO, ME/MI PTO, MCS Inclusive Excellence Teams, MHS BSU and the MMS BSU to celebrate Black History month as part of our Comets Connect Mirrors and windows series. Mason Intermediate School's beloved Black History Bowl, which was started in 2007 by Mr. & Mrs. Handy, is going bigger this year! The whole Comet commUNITY is invited to celebrate Black History Month by sharing their Black History knowledge in a live Kahoot Game, and families or groups (including past Black History Bowl competitors!) can sign up to be part of the Family Bowl Battle. A packet of study information will be provided. In addition, some current events will be included in the competition.

Music for All is a national organization that supports music programs through education and performance opportunities. Music for All is proud to partner with the William Mason High School band program to present the 2025 Cincinnati Regional Concert Band Festival as one of the Music for All Affiliate Regional Music Festivals. The Cincinnati Regional Concert Band Festival is a non-competitive concert performance and clinic-based event that fosters excellence and growth in concert band education and performance. Ensembles of all levels are encouraged to attend. This non-competitive festival contains two stages. The âFeature Stageâ is located in the Mason High School Auditorium. This stage is intended for ensembles of advanced skills. Performers on this stage will receive a 25-minute performance slot followed by a 30-minute clinic in a separate location. In addition, feature stage performances will be provided with Competition Suite Commentary from the clinicians, as well as a raw recording without commentary for submission or audition purposes. Bands wanting to perform on the auditorium stage as a Featured Ensemble are encouraged to include a link to an audio recording of their ensemble from sometime in the last three school years.  The Invited stage will be held in our Mason High School Small Commons. This stage is intended for younger, or developing ensembles. Performers on this stage will have a 50-minute time slot that includes the performance, and the clinic on stage with our guest clinicians. Directors may choose the amount of performance time that best fits the ensemble, and the clinic will fill the duration of their time. Please see this sample schedule from the 2024 Festival.
