“To ‘strike a chord’ is defined as evoking an emotional response,” according to artist Catharine Carter. “For me the idea of Mystic Chords are ones that vibrate or resonate deep within one’s soul.” Carter uses photographic montage and mixed media to compose storytelling narratives that explore deep feelings in order to awaken dreams and memories.  “By exploring my inner landscape,” she declares, “I can address my insecurities, fears, hopes and dreams to find harmony and balance, insight and inspiration.”   Artist Jude Lobe’s work for Mystic Chords is an eclectic mix of painting and sculpture, an appreciation of the natural world and the humans – past and present – who live in it. “Shamanic tradition refers to All That Is, as the Web of Life where nothing happens in a vacuum. One thought or action affects another. Everything, living and non-living, is inter-connected.” Lobe refers to them as Mystic Chords, and feels that recognizing this inter-connectedness is essential for creating a sustainable and equitable way of life. “My artworks in this show are my abstract expressions of nature.”   “I still feel new to the gallery and to the art world as a whole,” says woodworker Pete Rodrigues. “For the last 26 years, I have created pieces out of wood.” However, becoming a member of the gallery has allowed me to be more creative, using my imagination to discover new possibilities. The process of pushing the boundaries of creativity and design within my pieces of furniture is what motivates me as an artist. Vitality Boost is a 60min energizing blend of breath work (intentional breathing), mobility training, full-body stretching, and core strength training. This class is designed to help you move and feel better! The overall focus is to train the foundational aspects of movements (core strength, joint mobility, and breathing) and by doing so increase your ability to move freely and without pain. This class is great for anyone! Whether you’re a desk-job type looking to shake some stagnancy, a lifting enthusiast wanting to learn how to optimize your training, or anyone in between, you’ll find yourself in the right place. You’ll start with a few minutes of intentional breathing to connect with the body, then begin generating energy with 15 minutes of full-body stretches and mobility. The process of pushing the boundaries of creativity and design within my pieces of furniture is what motivates me as an artist. Fabric Paper (paper cloth) rocks.   It is a simple technique that yields a material with all of the fabulosity of paper: you can draw on it, paint on it, cut it into awesome shapes. It retains all of the flexibility and strength of cloth. You can stitch away with no worries of compromising the integrity. “To ‘strike a chord’ is defined as evoking an emotional response,” according to artist Catharine Carter. “For me the idea of Mystic Chords are ones that vibrate or resonate deep within one’s soul.” Carter uses photographic montage and mixed media to compose storytelling narratives that explore deep feelings in order to awaken dreams and memories.  “By exploring my inner landscape,” she declares, “I can address my insecurities, fears, hopes and dreams to find harmony and balance, insight and inspiration.”   Artist Jude Lobe’s work for Mystic Chords is an eclectic mix of painting and sculpture, an appreciation of the natural world and the humans – past and present – who live in it. “Shamanic tradition refers to All That Is, as the Web of Life where nothing happens in a vacuum. One thought or action affects another. Botanical oil paintings by Chris Graebner, abstract metal sculpture by Jason Smith, scratchboard paintings by Sally Terrell. In the gallery May 28th through June 23rd. Opening reception during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk, May 31st, 6-9pm. Acoustic music at the reception performed by the group "Adam & John." Each year botanical painter Chris Graebner is more enthralled by the flowers around her. "Last month I was given a bouquet of home-grown Ranunculus and watched them open like an Elizabethan ruff. Lunaria, also called Honesty or Money Plant, grows across the street from me. I watch as it develops its thin, transparent seed pods over the summer and hear them rustle in the autumn wind. Fiery-red Bee Balm grows across the street as well, its square stems a clue that it's a member of the mint family. Snap Dragons, a childhood favorite, grow upward in a spiral, adding buds as they rise. And then there are Roses, always roses. Shrub roses, climbing roses, tea roses, multiflora roses, wild roses – I love to paint them all. Jason Smith creates works of art that challenge the boundaries of traditional metal sculpting techniques. "With a passion for working with metal, I transform this raw material into pieces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also thought provoking." Smith's work reflects a deep interest in the duality of the material he works with - its strength and its fragility. Each piece is an expression of his artistic vision, exploring the relationship between form and function, the organic, geometric, and harmony of the world. "My sculptures are an abstract manipulation of form and space to create visual balance using rhythm, action and movement, combined to create compositions that convey the implied energy in the work." Artist Sally Terrell is drawn to vivid colors but finds that Scratchboard intrigues her most. "Since I enjoy doing animals, I find it the perfect medium. I am amazed at what can be created on an inked board with a variety of tools. You can play with the values of light and dark to create a very dramatic piece. I try to infuse my work with a positive energy, attitude, or message, which I strongly believe impacts the viewer." Terrell is a member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists and serves as board secretary. She has achieved the level of Signature Scratchboard Artist and has won awards for her work. Quintessence will be at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts from May 28 - June 23, with an opening reception on May 31 from 6-9pm.
