Join your ABRF colleagues to discuss shared questions, common challenges, or issues that you’re facing in your career or professional journey.  The monthly ABRF Peer Mentoring conversations are scheduled for: Third Tuesdays of the Month 2:00 – 3:00 pm ET Register here. Held monthly, these peer-to-peer mentoring discussions will be an opportunity to learn from one another and to identify new ideas or approaches to situations you may face within your roles. Similar to an informal mentoring program, these small-group conversations are an opportunity to leverage the diverse experiences and abilities within the ABRF Community. Possible topics for peer conversations include: –          Professional development options –          Core facility career paths –          Balancing cost recovery with the need to be cutting edge –          Authorship and tracking publications –          Training The specific number and  topics discussed during the Peer Mentoring Conversations will be determined by the participants. Everyone will have the opportunity to move among topics based on their interests and the value they receive from the discussions. ORT and CFAC are excited to announce that we will once again hold a SOM Core Facility Voucher Program and ask that you forward this information to your customer e-mail lists and send to your department for distribution on departmental list servs.The voucher program is intended for UNC researchers (from any school) to apply for up to $10,000 in funding to be spent at one or more SOM core facilities which invoice for services. This is specifically intended for NEW method development or PILOT DATA for currently unfunded projects that ALSO meets one of the following criteria:Establishes the applicant as a new customer of at least one core facilityCreates a multi-core pipelineAllows a customer of a core facility to use a new technique or methodology within a core they have previously used in other capacities (this is at the discretion of the core director)Applicants (who may be PIs or trainees)  will be required to meet with and have the written approval of the core directors for core facilities they intend to use at the time of submission and must plan to fully spend out their funds by June 30, 2025. Carry-over of funds is not guaranteed, and applicants should be aware that the technical feasibility to complete the study within the proposed timeframe will be an important factor in award decisions.Cores which can be used are limited to those administered by the School of Medicine or who serve a majority-SOM customer base. Abstract:  The TriTom platform is designed for in vivo molecular, physiological, and anatomical imaging of preclinical murine models. It employs co-registered photoacoustic and fluorescence imaging channels enabling high-fidelity visualization of regions that either absorb light or fluoresce at imaging depths up to 20-40 mm. A typical 36-sec long TriTom 3D scan interrogates a large volume of tissue (> 25 cm3) producing molecular maps accurately registered to 3D anatomy (high-resolution blood circulatory system, internal organs, and skin). TriTom visualizes oxyhemoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, and melanin without a need to use contrast agents, enabling spatially-resolved longitudinal assessment of vascular morphology and density, blood oxygenation, ischemia, tumor growth and metastasis. TriTom also provides quantitative in vivo imaging for a wide range of nanoparticles and molecular probes that absorb light in 460 nm – 1320 nm spectral range, and for fluorescent molecular probes with excitation between 460 nm and 800 nm, enabling applications in toxicology and targeted molecular imaging. With powerful and unique in vivo imaging capabilities, TriTom presents new ways to study live small animal models in a number of preclinical applications including cancer, toxicology, tissue engineering and regeneration, developmental biology, neuroscience, as well as in the development of drugs, therapies, optical and fluorescent molecular probes. Core Facility Showcase   When: Tuesday October 22, 2024 10 am – 12 pm   Where: Koury Oral Health Sciences lobbies (entrance off of either Manning or S Columbia St   What: Core facilities from UNC Chapel Hill will have a poster session and information available for existing and new customers. Come learn about new instrumentation or services in the core labs, pick up some swag, and discuss upcoming research needs.   Who: Core directors and managers across the disciplines will be present.
