Join us for an educational program with The North Carolina Arboretum to learn all about birds and the many different types that call Western North Carolina their home! Ever wondered why some birds migrate and some don’t? Or why some birds are bright colors while others blend in? At this program we’ll answer these and all of our biggest bird questions! We’ll also venture out on a bird walk, learn how to use binoculars, search for evidence of birds, and even learn some bird calls! Come ready to hear about the ecoEXPLORE program, our area’s many different types of birds, what they eat, where they live, and much more! This program is geared for ages 5 to 13. Scientists need YOUR help in studying animals everywhere, including your own backyard! Although mostly attended by adults, children aged 7 and up are welcome to attend accompanied by an adult. 2nd Thursdays from 6-7 pm in the Rogow Community Room Song Packets Monthly themes/songs are chosen by staff with song packets available in advance at the Library Circulation desk. We are unable to distribute the songs electronically due to copyright restrictions. Ukuleles to Borrow Bring your own or borrow one of our ukuleles available for public use with your library card. Join us for yoga at the Library!Class starts at 9:30 am, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months from December – March. There are no rain dates, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. Bring a yoga mat or towel and water, and be sure to dress in layers!Clare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional, physical, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness, a grateful mom of two awesome boys, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

Join us for this month’s Cookbook Club!Each month we look at cookbooks, do a little cooking, and meet to talk about our experiences. For February’s meeting, we’ll cook from Tiffy Cooks: 88 Easy Asian Recipes from My Family to Yours by Tiffy Chen. Tiffy Chen started blogging about food and recipes after learning to cook from her mother and grandmother. In her debut cookbook, Tiffy shares memories and recipes shaped by growing up in Taiwan – a country with rich culture, diverse cuisines, and some of the best street food in the world – along with beloved family recipes and unique dishes inspired by here travels across Southeast Asia. Registered participants can stop by the library to review the book and choose a recipe to make and share with the other participants. We’ll taste each other’s culinary creations, talk about the cookbook, share what we learned and swap recipes.

11:00 am Family Storytime (birth – 5 years)11:30 am Craft Time Join us for stories, songs, movement and more as we celebrate and promote early and emergent literacy at the Transylvania County Library! Same theme and craft as Tuesday storytime. More About Early and Emergent Literacy Babies, toddlers, preschoolers, in all stages of development with their parents and caregivers are welcome to our morning of celebration. Children start to learn language from the day they are born. As they grow and develop, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. During early speech and language development, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage, known as emergent literacy, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. From birth, babies listen to language patterns in everyday speech, as well as in rhyming, chanting, and singing – all of these play an important part in literacy development. As they develop, children see and interact with print in everyday situations. In everything from books and magazines to grocery lists, whether at home or in preschool, they are (and should be) encountering language in print well before they start elementary school. Parents can see their child’s growing appreciation and enjoyment of print as they begin to recognize words that rhyme, scribble with crayons, point out street signs and symbols, and name some letters of the alphabet. Gradually, children combine what they know about speaking and listening with what they know about print and become ready to learn to read and write. That’s what storytime at the library is all about!

While Cupid is in the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14, the library is also welcoming in the Fire Dragon and Chinese New Year with a special concert performance.  The community is invited to this free concert which will be held at noon in the Rogow Community Room. The trio set to perform are all virtuosos in their craft. “Asian Soundscapes” is directed and composed by virtuoso Chinese pipa player and singer Min Xiao-Fen, joined by Mari Ohta, a sensational Japanese koto player, and Amy Xin Yin, a rising voice in contemporary percussion. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, Min crafts soundscapes where ancient strings echo through modern rhythms, flowing with the harmony of the seasons to weave emotion, balance, and drama into a seamless journey of sound. Together, the trio bridges tradition and innovation, guiding listeners through a landscape where past and present sing as one.   This program is made possible by funding from the Friends of the Transylvania County Library.  Learn more about our Friends here.

Have you ever wanted to read some of the world’s greatest authors of literature, philosophy, economics, political science, and psychology, but would like a context for discussing the content? The Great Books Discussion Group at the Transylvania County Library has been meeting for over 30 years and explores a wide variety of selections from works of classic and modern prose, poetry, and drama.  The group uses the shared inquiry method of discussion, focusing exclusively on the assigned reading selection that allows every participant the opportunity to contribute.  The selections are usually short to allow for the twice a month meeting schedule. The group meets from 10:30 am to noon on the first and third Mondays of most months in the Connestee Conference Room on the second floor of the Library (except when the Library is closed).
