Curious about the complex currents shaping our world? Yearning to engage in meaningful discussions about global issues? Join the World Affairs Book Club, where passionate readers and engaged citizens delve into thought-provoking books that illuminate international politics, economics, and culture. Dive into the latest bestseller on climate change, dissect a historical analysis of a global conflict, or explore the social fabric of a distant land – all through the lens of engaging literature.  Vibrant group discussions foster understanding, challenge perspectives, and spark lively debate. Open to all, regardless of background or expertise, the World Affairs Book Club is a welcoming space to learn, connect, and become more informed global citizens. Books to be discussed can be placed on hold through the North Carolina Cardinal system and will be delivered to the Transylvania County Library for you to check out.  The group meets from 10:00 am to 11:30 on the third Thursday of most months in the Connestee Conference Room on the second floor of the Library (except when the Library is closed). Join us for yoga in the library amphitheater every Friday from April-November!Class starts at 9:30 am, and instructor Clare Desmelik will lead the series. There are no rain dates, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. Bring a yoga mat or towel, water, and your sun hat!Clare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional, physical, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness, a grateful mom of two awesome boys, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

Join us as the sun sets! Local and regional performers share their music in the Library Amphitheater. Rain location: Rogow Room at the Library. This is a free community concert, and tickets are not required. You are welcome to bring lawn chairs, camp chairs or blankets to sit on for an outdoor concert. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are allowed please clean up after yourself. If the concert is indoors due to weather, seating capacity will be limited. Free parking is available in the library parking lot and in the parking lots of nearby County buildings and along several nearby streets. Bringing a contemporary country/rock sound, Ashes & Arrows will take the stage on Sept. 20. With a musical journey that had humble beginnings at an open mic in Asheville in 2021, the band has swiftly captured the attention of audiences worldwide. They are currently working on their second album with an acclaimed Nashville producer. They are known for their strong harmonies, poignant lyrics and infectious on-stage presence. TC STRONG is a community collaborative dedicated to the emotional well-being of all youth in Transylvania County. Our vision is a community where every young person feels confident, secure, and connected with a sense of purpose and hope. To achieve this, we focus many efforts on educating more safe, caring adults to recognize and intervene in mental health challenges and crises. “Talk Saves Lives,” is a powerful presentation that provides essential information on suicide prevention not only for youth, but across all age groups. More About Early and Emergent Literacy Babies, toddlers, preschoolers, in all stages of development with their parents and caregivers are welcome to our morning of celebration. Children start to learn language from the day they are born. As they grow and develop, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. During early speech and language development, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage, known as emergent literacy, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. From birth, babies listen to language patterns in everyday speech, as well as in rhyming, chanting, and singing – all of these play an important part in literacy development. As they develop, children see and interact with print in everyday situations. In everything from books and magazines to grocery lists, whether at home or in preschool, they are (and should be) encountering language in print well before they start elementary school. Parents can see their child’s growing appreciation and enjoyment of print as they begin to recognize words that rhyme, scribble with crayons, point out street signs and symbols, and name some letters of the alphabet. Gradually, children combine what they know about speaking and listening with what they know about print and become ready to learn to read and write. That’s what storytime at the library is all about!

Unfortunately, the Noontime Notions with Jack Claiborne has been cancelled due to illness.  We hope to reschedule Jack for a future Noontime Notions when he’s feeling better.  A Noontime Notions EXTRA on September 24 will feature Jack Claiborne presenting “Charlotte, The Slugger, and Me”.  The program will begin at noon in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library. Noontime Notions programs feature authors, performers, and presenters providing engaging notions for consideration, enjoyment, and discovery.   The program is made possible by the Friends of the Library and will last approximately one hour. Jack Claiborne is a former columnist and  associate editor at the The Charlotte Observer and his brother Slug was a pioneer of fine dining in Charlotte. Jack will discuss growing up in Charlotte, NC and his family’s struggles after his father’s death during the Great Depression leaving his mother with six children ranging from 3 years to 18 years. After seeing and hearing President Roosevelt speak in Charlotte the family happened on a house in town for rent and moved to the city.  His memoir “Charlotte, The Slugger, and Me” shows  how his family stuck together and worked together to eventually thrive.  Jack became a member of the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame and his brother Slug was a civic activist even presenting the successful idea for integrating Charlotte’s restaurants in the early 1960s. Jack will share his stories (some funny, some poignant) detailing how Charlotte grew and changed during the Great Depression, World War ll, the post war boom, the civil rights movement and beyond.  He will have copies of his book available for sale and signing.

Breaking the usual Fall Concert Series pattern, the library will host a special Thursday night concert on Sept. 26 to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the release of the iconic Beatles album Abbey Road.  The album will be played in its entirety by The Andrew Thelston Band who consider performing it “a labor of love that they are all too happy to share with audiences of all ages”. Come visit the Bookmobile at the Mountain Monarch Festival!  Monarch Fest takes place at Gorges State Park in Sapphire, North Carolina.  The festival will celebrate the monarch butterfly during its migration and bring attention to the species’ declining numbers. Gorges State Park lies along the monarch’s migratory route. The butterflies can be seen in late September each year flying over the park’s visitor center on their way south to the high-elevation fir forests of Mexico’s Neovolcanic Mountains, where they overwinter until early spring. Friends, neighbors, and families are invited to join in the celebration of the Monarch butterfly and learn more about its impressive life & migration. This event is FREE and open to the public.
