The NC Arboretum and Department of Adult Education host a unique learning opportunity with a dynamic team of scientists from the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS) and NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). Learn from the scientists who maintain and analyze weather observations, climate records, and environmental data sets used by community partners, scientists, and decision makers across public and private sectors the world over. Science-backed presentations along with discussion will place our local weather and climate within a global perspective, examining what drives Earth’s warming temperatures and the increasing extreme weather events such as hurricanes, while considering the latest data on climate trends and the effects on both humans and ecosystems. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, or NCEI, is the Nation’s leading authority for environmental data. Scientists at NCEI manage one of the largest archives of atmospheric, coastal, geophysical, and oceanic research in the world, and provide access to thousands of climate-related products and services. The North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies, or NCICS, is an NC State University research institute co-located with NOAA NCEI in Asheville, North Carolina. NCICS facilitates climate-related research in order to expand our understanding of the Earth system and its interactions with human activities. The style is a ribbed basket as we add in round reed to form the ‘ribs’ which is what gives the basket its shape and structure. Ribbed baskets are great for gathering things: eggs, herbs, garden greens, your imagination is the limit for its use. You’ll create and take home one ribbed basket with handle about 8″x8”x10”. Carleigh Fairchild has a deep love for the Earth. She gardens, keeps bees, wild harvests, processes animals, tans hides, weaves baskets, and finds joy in time spent around the fire. As the founder of Human Nature Connection LLC, she is dedicated to helping others rediscover respectful and collaborative relationships with the more then human world. Carleigh’s journey—including 86 days on the survival show ALONE in Patagonia—deepened her understanding of belonging and connection. This session begins with a series of gentle and easy Qigong movements to clear the mind, release tension, support the body and brain’s natural healing processes, and generate a sense of inner calm. Jenne Sluder, MA C-IAYT holds a Master’s in Transpersonal Psychology: Ecopsychology from Naropa University. She is a certified yoga therapist, mind-body specialist, and meditation instructor.
