Bonsai Demonstration: A Mount Mitchell Makeoverwith Arthur Joura Sunday, March 8 | 2 – 4pm REGISTER HERE A tray landscape depicting a scene atop North Carolina’s Mount Mitchell – highest peak east of the Mississippi River – is a favorite among the Arboretum’s bonsai collection. Although it might appear that bonsai are unchanging, they are in fact changing all the time due to the fact they are alive and growing. Our Mount Mitchell has gotten overgrown in recent years and needs to be taken apart and reconstructed. This demonstration program will give a good overview of the process, while also offering insight to the philosophy behind the bonsai concept.This program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. Arthur Joura has been the bonsai curator at the Arboretum since 1992 and oversaw the design and development of the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Joura augmented early training in fine art and studied bonsai with some of the leading bonsai authorities in the United States and in Japan. His greatest teachers are trees, however. His love of hiking and photographing trees in nature has shaped the Arboretum’s collection and firmly rooted it in a regional identify — one that elevates naturalism in art and the use of traditional bonsai species alongside species native to the Southern Appalachian mountains — creating in the process one of the most acclaimed public collections of bonsai in the country. • Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! The NC Arboretum and Department of Adult Education host a unique learning opportunity with a dynamic team of scientists from the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS) and NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). Learn from the scientists who maintain and analyze weather observations, climate records, and environmental data sets used by community partners, scientists, and decision makers across public and private sectors the world over. Science-backed presentations along with discussion will place our local weather and climate within a global perspective, examining what drives Earth’s warming temperatures and the increasing extreme weather events such as hurricanes, while considering the latest data on climate trends and the effects on both humans and ecosystems. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, or NCEI, is the Nation’s leading authority for environmental data. Scientists at NCEI manage one of the largest archives of atmospheric, coastal, geophysical, and oceanic research in the world, and provide access to thousands of climate-related products and services. The North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies, or NCICS, is an NC State University research institute co-located with NOAA NCEI in Asheville, North Carolina. NCICS facilitates climate-related research in order to expand our understanding of the Earth system and its interactions with human activities. Christa has an adventurous heart, and loves to help others encounter wholeness through embodiment and nature connection practices. She has had a professional bodywork practice for 18 years as a nationally certified Massage Therapist, and is also a practitioner of Ortho-Bionomy®, Usui Reiki Master, Certified Pediatric Massage Therapist, Clinical Aromatherapist, and Certified Traditional Herbalist.
