Come celebrate this festive time of year with us with a collection of songs both secular and sacred, and welcoming to all.There are two program dates, one on Thursday, December 11 and one on Thursday, December 18, featuring the same repertoire. The concerts will take place after normal library hours, with the doors open to concertgoers starting at 6:30 pm.Please note that, unlike our usual programs, this special event is ticketed and costs $30 per person. Join Marcus Renna in the Scott Room for a screening and discussion of the 1957 satirical comedy Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? A lampoon on the popular culture of the 1950s, Hollywood hype, and corporate advertising, the film was an original screenplay written by director and produce Frank Tashlin, although the title was taken from the 1955 play by George Axelrod. It stars Jayne Mansfield and Tony Randall.Struggling copy writer Rockwell P. Hunter (Randall) is at risk of being fired when the advertising agency where he works is set to lose its largest account - the Stay-Put Lipstick Company. In desperation, he hatches a scheme to get the famous actress Rita Marlowe (Mansfield) to become Stay-Put's newest model and spokeswoman. However, to get her to agree, Rock has to pretend to be her boyfriend in order to make her real boyfriend, TV personality Bobo Branigansky, jealous. This ends up working too well, with the media catapulting Rock to fame as Rita's new lover. With Rock's boss seeking to leverage his newfound fame, he soon realizes celebrity is a double-edged sword as his new existence is hollow.Tashlin was immensely pleased with the reception of the film and as the signature appearance of Mansfield in the movies.A zany comedy that skillfully skewers the self-important, the ambitious, and the silly in the then new world of TV advertising.

Join us in Meeting Room South for a ukulele jam session with others who love to sing and play music. Please bring your tuned-up uke, extra copies of any music you wish to share, and a fervent desire to have fun with other ukulele players. Hawaiian shirts optional!All levels of skill are welcome, but knowledge of basic chords is necessary. No formal instruction will be provided, but our regular ukulele players love to help out beginners! You are also welcome to bring an accompanying instrument instead, such as harmonicas, bells, tambourines, kazoos, or your own voice.For those interested in getting started and learning more about ukulele music, YouTube has many great lessons and demonstrations.
