Join us in Meeting Room South for a ukulele jam session with others who love to sing and play music. Please bring your tuned-up uke, extra copies of any music you wish to share, and a fervent desire to have fun with other ukulele players. Hawaiian shirts optional!All levels of skill are welcome, but knowledge of basic chords is necessary. No formal instruction will be provided, but our regular ukulele players love to help out beginners! This monthly meeting is intended for Scarsdale residents who are middle school, junior high, high school, or homeschool students wanting to get involved with the community hub which is the Scarsdale Public Library. You can earn community service credit when you meet with your peers and teen library specialist(s) to discuss what you want from your public library's Teen Services Department. We're asking Teen Advisory Board (TAB) members for: input into what programs teens want the Library to offer and when they should be scheduled;ideas for programs/classes teens want to lead/teach for teens or other age groups (with departmental approval);help promoting programs to classmates and other community members;creative contributions to our Instagram;ideas for how to decorate and equip the Teen Room and Makerspace;requests about what books we should order and in what formats; andsuggestions for partnerships with teachers/organizations where overlap exists between their purposes and those of Scarsdale Public Library, whose mission is to encourage the joy of reading, the exploration of ideas, and the pursuit of lifelong learning for all Scarsdalians.REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED This month we are having our annual Holiday Book Swap.  In order to participate you must register by Friday, December 12 at 10:00am, in order to be eligible to receive a gift.

"Who controls the past controls the future" - George Orwell.Please join us in the Scott Room to discuss The Magic Kingdom by Russell Banks. Hosted by David while Nancy is away."A multilayered tale of innocence and guilt from a gifted storyteller.""Banks’ previous novel, Foregone (2021), had a dying filmmaker trying to set his life’s record straight as former students videotape him for a tribute. In the new work, his main character, 81-year-old Harley Mann, is recalling his adolescence, when he made a life-changing choice. His is the voice behind a box of audiotapes found in a library basement and here being 'edited and shaped...into a more or less coherent narrative' by Russell Banks, according to the foreword. Early in the narrative, Harley’s recently widowed mother moves her four boys in 1902 to the New Bethany Shaker community on 7,000 acres in Florida. It’s a small, close-knit group defined by hard work, honesty, equal rights for women, and celibacy. Harley finds a mentor in the group’s male leader, Elder John, and falls in love with Sadie Pratt, a consumptive young woman who comes to live in the community when her nearby sanitarium closes. While New Bethany seems like an idyllic, even magical, place, there’s also discord and envy, natural calamities, and foreshadowing of a 'national scandal' for the community. After a long buildup, the scandal itself fills some 70 pages of solid crime and courtroom drama. Harley went on to work in Florida real estate, including buying the 7,000 acres of New Bethany, which he eventually sold, in possibly questionable deals, to Walt Disney. Behind any latter-day Eden or utopia or Magic Kingdom lurks some unoriginal sins. That’s one of several themes at work here, but the core is the emotional mirror of memory, a construct of events and their recall, or, for a writer wondering how he will be remembered, a construct of his books and readers, for whom Banks may well be a prized piece of gray matter" - Kirkus.

If you are running late, come anyway! If you are still in your Pajamas, come anyway!  Baby crying and won’t stop fussing, come anyway! We all understand that getting out of the house during the perinatal period is difficult but come anyway! This is time for you to take care of YOU.During the group we will combine brief education about mood and anxiety disorders that can get in the way of enjoying your family forming journey, along with support group time. Note: This program is for people 18 and up.Come to the library for some welcoming, focused time meant to give adult day habilitation groups, people living in congregate housing, and all people 18+ who might receive special care at home an opportunity for social interaction and fun games and activities. This will be a relaxed space set aside for people to visit the library and enjoy themselves. We'll have easy to join games such as UNO, Connect Four, Jenga, and more. There'll be coloring sheets and art supplies for enjoyment and self-expression. People will be free to move around and chat with friends or simply sit peacefully with their own preferred activity. This is meant to be a welcoming and inclusive program. Do you have your own favorite game or idea for a fun activity? We would be thrilled if you reach out to the library to discuss how we can better adapt Thursdays Together to serve caregivers and self-advocates.A librarian will be present to help supervise activities but we do ask that all caregivers or aides accompanying a person or group remain in the room during the program.

The library and the Scarsdale Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation warmly invite you to a concert featuring the sounds of the holiday season with the beloved Westchester Band. Come celebrate this festive time of year with us with a collection of songs both secular and sacred, and welcoming to all.There are two program dates, one on Thursday, December 11 and one on Thursday, December 18, featuring the same repertoire. The concerts will take place after normal library hours, with the doors open to concertgoers starting at 6:30 pm.Please note that, unlike our usual programs, this special event is ticketed and costs $30 per person. You can purchase tickets at scarsdale.com/catalog. You do not need to be a resident of the Village of Scarsdale in order to purchase a ticket.
