Pound Ridge Library, in collaboration with Pound Ridge Partnership, the Human Rights Advisory Committee, and Booksy Galore, is thrilled to welcome author Diana Goetsch as we kick off Pride Month! Diana will be discussing her book, This Body I Wore, a Washington Post Best Book of the Year. It has been described as, ‘A captivating memoir of one woman’s long journey to late transition, as the trans community emerges alongside her.’ “Achingly beautiful.” –Manuel Betancourt, The New York Times Book Review Long before Laverne Cox appeared on the cover of Time, far removed from drag and ballroom culture, there were countless trans women living and dying as men, most of whom didn’t even know they were trans. Diana Goetsch’s This Body I Wore chronicles one woman’s long journey to coming out, a path that runs parallel to the emergence of the trans community over the past several decades. “How can you spend your life face-to-face with an essential fact about yourself and still not see it?” This is a question often asked of trans people, and a question that Goetsch, an award-winning poet and essayist, addresses with the power and complexity of lived reality. She brings us into her childhood, her time as a dynamic and beloved teacher at New York City’s Stuyvesant High School, and her plunge into the city’s crossdressing subculture in the 1980s and ’90s. Under cover of night, crossdressers risked their jobs and their safety to give expression to urges they could neither control nor understand. Many would become late transitioners, the Cinderellas of the trans community largely ignored by history. Goetsch has written not a transition memoir, but rather a full account of a trans life, one both unusually public and closeted. All too often trans lives are reduced to before-and-after photos, but what if that before photo lasted fifty years? Please register below. Printed Matters  The exhibition will include multimedia paintings created over the past 35 years, with the common thread of collage elements clipped from vintage books, magazines and newspapers.   The exhibition runs from June 1 to July 7. “Thinking of my earliest days, books, magazines and newspapers have been a consistent source of direction and inspiration. From the moment I saw a reproduction of Picasso’s great anti-war painting Guernica (1937) as a child, to my current use of collage in my paintings and sculptures, that connection to words and images on the printed page, whether I am creating, writing or curating, has been a seamless link to finding and filtering data.” The Library is honored to present an exhibition by D. Dominick Lombardi.  Mr. Lombardi is an artist, art writer and curator based in New York. A 45-Year retrospective of his art, which was curated by T. Michael Martin, has traveled from the Clara M. Eagle Gallery at MSU in Western Kentucky in 2019, to the Marie WalshSharpe Gallery of Contemporary Art, Ent Center for the Arts, UCCS in Colorado Springs in 2021 – next moving to the Dowd Gallery at SUNY Cortland, New York in February,2022. Some of his writing credits include the New Art Examiner (1997-98 & 2023-present), The Brooklyn Rail (2023-present), ARTnews (1997), The New York Times(1998-2005), Juxtapoz (2002), Art in Asia (2007-2009), The Huffington Post (2012- 2018), ARTES (2016-present), CultureCatch (2006-present), and dArt Internationalmagazine (2005-present). Our Children’s All-Ages Stories program is a place where imaginations take flight, and children of all ages delight in captivating tales, creating unforgettable memories. Bring your child to this enchanting program, where the pages of books come to life. We offer a warm and inviting space for kids to immerse themselves in the joy of reading and storytelling. It is the perfect opportunity to foster a love of reading, where engaging stories and interactive sessions spark a lifelong passion for books. Please register on library website. Ikebana (ē-kĕ-bah-nah) is the ancient art of Japanese flower arranging and one of the traditional arts of Japan. A free translation of Ikebana might be “living flowers” or “making flowers come alive”. When flowers are beautifully arranged in a container, the arrangement evokes the whole of nature itself, and people’s relationship with nature. Presented by Pound Ridge resident Roxane Wasserman. Roxane’s designs have won numerous blue ribbons and top NGC design awards at New York and Connecticut Flower Shows. She has also done weddings, ikebana exhibitions, flower shows and floral designs for the home. Roxane currently serves as Director of the Sogetsu NY Branch, 1st Vice President of Ikebana International New York Chapter #7, Past President of the Pound Ridge Garden Club and NGC, Inc. Accredited Judge. Flowers will be provided. Some basic materials will be available for sale (or bring your own). See prices below. Please bring scissors suitable for cutting flowers, scissors for cutting branch material, kenzan (2 1/2 – 3 1/2 inches), a container or jug to hold water, a small towel, and a container based on style of design: low container (11-14 inch diameter, 2 inches tall) or tall narrow container (approximately 3 1/2 inch diameter and 11-12 inches tall). Students will have the option to design in either container with the exception of new students who will design in the low container.
