This year, visitors are invited to experience Branches in Bloom, a new spring festival taking root at Planting Fields. Centered on the spectacular collections of magnolias and flowering cherries near the expansive lawn west of the Main House, the festival showcases hundreds of trees at the height of their bloom: an unforgettable celebration of spring in full flower! It’s a chance to slow down. To wander. To look up into canopies of color. To celebrate the trees that shape our environment and define this extraordinary place. This is spring as it was meant to be experienced. For nearly four decades, Planting Fields has proudly celebrated Arbor Day and the vital role trees play in our environment. Since the Coe family purchased the estate in 1913, rhododendrons have been a defining feature of the landscape. The Coes delighted in collecting and cultivating some of the most beautiful hybrids of the era, creating a collection that has captivated visitors for more than a century. Today, the legacy continues. The Planting Fields team and their collaboration with rhododendron experts has led to the restoration, propagation and expansion of this remarkable collection, bringing back historic estate-era varieties and introducing hundreds of stunning new hybrids developed by world-class plant breeders. On this tour, you’ll get an inside look at the work behind the blooms – from rare plants to innovative propagation projects – and learn how these spectacular rhododendrons are cared for and preserved for future generations. Join artist Sam Van Aken, Planting Fields Foundation’s 2025 Catalyst artist, for a hands-on introduction to the art and science of tree grafting. Internationally recognized for his Tree of 40 Fruit project – living sculptures that bear dozens of fruit varieties on a single tree – Van Aken is a contemporary artist and Syracuse University professor whose work has been featured at major museums and public sites across the globe. In this immersive two-hour workshop, participants will explore the rich history and techniques of grafting, learn how Van Aken weaves this centuries-old practice into his artwork, including his recent on-site installation The Planting Fields Stand, and then try it themselves! Each participant will graft their own apple tree to take home and plant, creating a living connection to this unique experience. Capacity is capped at just 20 participants to ensure an intimate learning environment with direct guidance from the artist himself. The performance explores both von Steuben’s military legacy and his identity as a gay man navigating the complexities of 18th-century society, tracing his journey from Prussia to the American Revolution, where he helped transform the Continental Army into a disciplined force. Building on this powerful exploration of history and identity, the evening transitions into a dynamic panel discussion featuring author Josh Trujillo and illustrator Levi Hastings, the creative team behind Washington’s Gay General. This compelling graphic novel reexamines the life of Baron von Steuben, blending historical research with vivid, contemporary storytelling. Step into a world of elegance, ambition, and imagination in this captivating talk with Kedra Kearis, Ph.D., Associate Curator of Art and Visual Culture at Winterthur Museum, exploring how the elite women on the North Shore shaped domestic environments through the adoption of French revival styles. Focusing on figures such as Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, Katherine Mackay, and our very own Mai Rogers Coe, this program reveals how Gilded Age women of the Gold Coast visualized centuries of French style through the art, architecture, and interiors of their grand residences. From a medieval-inspired château to French Renaissance and eighteenth-century interiors, these storied estates reveal a wide range of French models in their conception. Imported furnishings, decorative arts, and commissioned portraiture created richly layered settings that evoked both Gothic fantasy and ancien régime elegance. Whether building a castle of one’s own or simply a room of one’s own, this talk explores how these women cultivated le goût français and brought French art and design traditions into their homes, positioning themselves as influential tastemakers of the Gilded Age. Her publications include contributions to Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide and the edited volume Chronicling Lost Legacies: Women Collectors, Patrons, and Tastemakers (Brill, 2026).
