Pages of History is a historical fiction book club for middle schoolers. Every month, we'll explore stories set in different time periods and places. After discussing the books, we'll either do a craft or activity associated with the reading. You can pick up the books at the circulation desk or Youth Service area. February's Book: "The Bletchley Riddle" by Ruta Sepetys and Steve Sheinkin Synapsis: Summer, 1940. Nineteen-year-old Jakob Novis and his quirky younger sister Lizzie share a love of riddles and puzzles. And now they’re living inside of one. The quarrelsome siblings find themselves amidst one of the greatest secrets of World War II—Britain’s eccentric codebreaking factory at Bletchley Park. As Jakob joins Bletchley’s top minds to crack the Nazi's Enigma cipher, fourteen-year-old Lizzie embarks on a mission to solve the mysterious disappearance of their mother. The Battle of Britain rages and Hitler’s invasion creeps closer. And at the same time, baffling messages and codes arrive on their doorstep while a menacing inspector lurks outside the gates of the Bletchley mansion. Join us once a month for a curated screening! It could be an old Hollywood classic, an international film, a modern trailblazer, or something completely different! This month's screening: Nightcrawler (2014, 117 minutes, dir. Dan Gilroy, rated R) A dark and satirical thriller, Nightcrawler is a noir for the modern age. Focusing on Lou Bloom (played to perfection by Jake Gyllenhaal), an unhinged man willing to do anything to succeed, it follows his journey as a freelance journalist who specializes in getting footage of grisly crime scenes and selling it to local news stations. One of the best movies of the 2010s, Nightcrawler is a film you won't soon forget. This is an after-hours program for adults. Bring your own food and drink (no alcohol) and/or enjoy some of our provided refreshments and snacks. The library doors lock at 7 PM so we are required to stay on the third floor after closing time.
