Copake Picklemania! The Town of Copake invites you to our inaugural Pickleball Tournament (rain date: Sunday, June 2) Held on the brand new courts at the Copake Memorial Park (alternative venue in case of weather: Taconic Hills Regional High School BEGINNERS AND VETERANS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN THE TOURNAMENT This is not a “competition level” tournament. The tournament is open to all but limited to 64 players on a first come, first served basis. Games will be won by the first team to reach 11 points, or the leading team after 12 minutes of play, whichever happens first. All play will happen between the hours of 9am and 3pm on the four courts in Copake Memorial Park. 16 teams will compete in the morning and 16 teams in the afternoon, with a break in-between. Participants will get to play a minimum of five games. Aloha Tacos food truck will be available on Saturday only. All players must pre-register no later than May 1 and you must register as a team. You will be asked to self-rank during the registration process based upon supplied guidelines. The round robin play will be held in up to four tracts based upon rating levels. Seating will not be supplied. The landscape is full of clues to its history when you know how to read it! During this special guided walk, participants will join Tom Wessels to learn about the art of ‘forest forensics’ at Hand Hollow. Using ecological features and historical land use makers as guides, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the land’s past and a new way of seeing forests. What’s involved: We will walk sections of the Beaver Byway trail, stopping often to discuss ecological features and historical land usage at different spots along the trail. The terrain on the Beaver Byway includes packed earth and exposed roots. Additional accessibility information will be provided closer to the event. What to bring: Water, weather-appropriate clothing and footwear, and a way to take notes (i.e. camera, smartphone, or a journal). What not to bring: Please, no dogs.

Images of Rural Community Columbia County is one of the few places in the northeast where living on a dirt road is not a novelty.  Over 59 miles of unpaved lanes criss-cross the Chathams alone.  Many of these country byways have hardly changed since the days when Martin Van Buren’s horse-drawn carriage carried him under leafy canopies that framed breathtaking views of the Hudson River Valley, views which continue to portray a lifestyle distinct to our region. Soft and mellow, the images of our foreparents in this exhibit present life through a genteel amber glow. Others are stark, almost haunting.  The frank stares of our predecessors who pose with stolid dignity by weathered clapboard buildings and local landmarks—a few recognizable and still standing and virtually unchanged—portray a hard life, the challenges of which, by today’s standards, are hard to imagine.  But while dour faces and frayed edges suggest a life devoid of pleasure, numerous photos reveal happy times on bicycles, pony carts and sleds, and suggest a simplicity of lifestyle and excitement for the development of a new nation. In this exhibit an extensive collection of vintage photographs provided by CCHS and Red Rock Historical Society that document what life was like along these dirt roads a century ago are complemented and contrasted with local high school student’s photos of contemporary winter scenes along Chatham’s unpaved network of roads.   The students’ photographs, curated by nationally celebrated photographer Paul Lange, are drawn from a body of work that is the brainchild of Ichabod Crane art teacher, Sandy Dwileski.  Dwileski saw an artistic opportunity—winter road scapes rich in subtle hues, shadow contrasts and complex compositions—set about organizing an outing with her advanced photography class to follow the system of roads mapped by the Chatham Dirt Road Coalition and photograph the journey. Join us for this celebration of the history of our community and the heritage of our dirt roads! On display thru December 2024

On Charley’s 89th birthday, Park Theater Hudson is excited to welcome him and Gerard Malanga into the hallowed walls of our venue to share a lifetime of his poetry for his upcoming book release.Charles Plymell’s poems in Over the Stage of Kansas are at times as quiet & thoughtful as a farmer’s field & then suddenly as bustling as a raging river or a crowded city street. This collection brings together some of Plymell’s best material written over several decades & places it under one giant circus tent of literary thrills for your enjoyment. The author of such classics as Apocalypse Rose & Last of the Moccasins, Plymell was born in Holcomb, Kansas at the height of the Dust Bowl & now lives with his wife Pam, in Cherry Valley, New York. From the very beginning, Charles Plymell has always been a wild child, born in a converted chicken coop, in what would later become Truman Capote’s infamous lonesome prairie, at a time when its blood-soaked landscape still meant a slow quiet death for the thoughtful young men and women of his generation. His family would soon move to Wichita, where a young Plymell would later find himself at the center of a vortex of creativity that would shoot him out of the cannon of youth and later onto the streets of San Francisco in the early 1960’s. A friend and contemporary of such mythologized literary figures as Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady, Plymell has always been a poet of both people and place, those he has chosen to let occupy a space in his heart and the restless geography of his life, that none of us can really shake, no matter how hard we try. All of this is on full display in Over the Stage of Kansas, poems written between 1966 and 2023, but is really the product of an entire lifetime of memories, where every moment, whether comical, mundane, sad, or joyful, is vividly recalled and tucked inside the pages of this ample volume. Pages that swing open like the doors of runaway train cars, to reveal poets, long dead matinee idols and the Kansas girls of his dreams, that so many boys once pinned their hopes on before waking up in a larger universe, often feeling as empty and alone as a farmer’s field. And while the best poems are often narratives of self examination written to chase away old demons into the past, what Plymell offers his readers here, is not only a record of his own life, but brave glimpses into their own history, at their best when faced head on. He is giving them one last chance to run their fingers through the soil of their childhood-before everything gets swept away. Charles Plymell is a force of nature, a husband, a father, a friend, a publisher, an educator and a poet, who could only have come out of his particular place and time. He is a vortex that has come full circle.

Enjoy the sights, sounds, and views of Overmountain during this sunset sound bath and hike led by Glendy Yeung! During this program, participants will be invited to deepen their connection to nature and to themselves. With mindful prompts throughout the walk and sound bathing experience, participants will have the opportunity to relax and tune their senses into the natural world. What’s involved: The first hour of this program includes a .5-mile guided walk on the Kestrel trail over an old road and forested-packed earth. The second hour will include a sunset sound bath at the Kite’s Hill Gazebo. Participants may lay down or sit for this portion of the program, which will include mindful speaking by Glendy Yeung and the use of sound instruments. What to bring: Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear and bring water and a lawn chair or blanket for sound bathing. Bringing an additional blanket or layers to wear during the sound bath is highly recommended, as temperatures drop as the sun sets! What not to bring: Please, no dogs.
