Women in World War IIThis program will be recorded and made available on the Library's YouTube channel.Please note:Registration is optional, but is advised due to limited seating. Registered patrons will have a seat. Waitlisted patrons are invited to use standing room. Walk-ins will be admitted if space allows Doors open at 6:30pm. Presentation begins at 7pm. Description: Join us for an overview of the roles women played in the war, and a look at the specific roles women played in seven countries involved in the war. This talk will also include a handout that lists women from Green County, NY who contributed to the war effort.Speaker Bio: Richard Muggeo is a retired history teacher from Catskill, where he taught for 30 years. Mr. Muggeo is married and has three daughters and eight grandchildren. He is a WW II buff who traces his interest in the war to his father’s service in the Pacific in 1943-45. He currently serves on the board of the Green County Historical Society.About This Series: The Town of Bethlehem Historical Association (BHA) has been incorporated as a not-for-profit membership organization since 1965. Along with upkeep of collections and exhibits at the Cedar Hill Schoolhouse Museum at 1003 River Rd. Selkirk, the BHA is pleased to continue its long tradition of presenting fall and spring series of talks by distinguished local speakers on a variety of topics designed to stimulate an appreciation of our historic heritage. We volunteer to assist women in domestic violence shelters in the Capital Region. We plan an annual retreat for women and offer grants to women leaving shelters to help them buy furniture. Our meeting will help us plan a public meeting at an area church.

Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary—from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean.From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history, sourcing letters from the enslaved, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics.
