Since 1999, this distinguished position has brought nationally recognized writers to campus to inspire, teach, and connect with our literary community. Natural Egg Dyeing Workshop  Join Director Carlene Bermann & artist Sara Lynch to learn techniques for dyeing Easter eggs with vegetables, plants, and spices. You will also learn how to create intricate patterns on your eggs using old silk clothing and foraged materials, like leaves and flowers. Dye your own eggs on-site, or decorate pre-dyed eggs. To color eggs, you can choose from a variety of natural materials, such as coffee, turmeric, cabbage, and foraged plants. We will also be using vintage silk scraps to transfer dye onto eggs for a unique look. Recommended for Ages 4+. Spaces are limited. Pre-registration recommended. All materials will be provided at the workshop.

Art Exhibit The Ogdensburg History Museum presents "Connecting With The Past: Ogdensburg Revisited," a compelling solo exhibition of watercolor paintings by award-winning artist Valerie Patterson. The exhibit opens April 1 and runs through April 30 in the hallway of the Blevins Building, at 206 Ford St., Ogdensburg. The public is invited to a Grand Opening Reception on Sunday, April 12, from 1 p.m.  to 3 p.m. where they can meet the artist and explore a body of work that serves as a visual bridge between the city’s storied past and its present. A Homecoming Through Art Born in 1963 and raised in Ogdensburg, Valerie Patterson’s deep humanitarian roots were planted by her parents, a Presbyterian minister and a public school teacher. After a distinguished 34-year career teaching visual art, Patterson focused on her own practice. "Coming back to Ogdensburg has given me a renewed understanding of the importance of place," said Patterson. "This city—its people, its history, and its memories—has helped shape who I am. Each painting in this exhibition creates a space I invite you to enter emotionally." Where Archival History Meets Contemporary Vision "Connecting With The Past" features meticulously researched representational works, many of which utilize archival imagery from the Ogdensburg History Museum and local collections, such as Chuck Kelly’s historic scrapbooks. Patterson’s process is one of patience and contemplation; each piece begins with a conceptual framework and pencil studies, followed by months of building translucent watercolor layers. Each large-scale (27”x35”) painting takes approximately three months to complete. Key works in the exhibition include: "Investigating Local History": A vibrant scene at State and Ford Streets where modern children leap into a historic trolley. "Dropping By The Family Business": An exploration of the legendary Hackett’s Hardware, featuring a modern-day Hackett descendant visiting his ancestors. "Connecting With The Past": A poignant look at downtown before Urban Renewal, featuring a contemporary figure using a cell phone to point the way to the Museum. "Home": A somber and reflective look at the former United Helper’s Orphanage that once stood at 1200 State Street. About the Artist Valerie Patterson earned her degrees in art and education from SUNY Potsdam. Her award-winning watercolors have been exhibited extensively across the U.S. and abroad, including at the Bond St. Gallery (Brooklyn), the Torpedo Factory Art Center (Virginia), and the Dayton International Peace Museum. She is a recipient of the "Juror’s Award of Excellence" from the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center and multiple "Awards of Excellence" from Manhattan Arts International. Exhibition Details:

Runners can graduate from the 5K to the half-marathon, or sample the half-marathon virtually this year, on their own or with a group of running buddies, to prepare for next year. Participants can also try a bit of both with the hybrid half-marathon option. Half-marathon and 5K distances are offered in both in-person and virtual formats. The half-marathon is only available as a hybrid event. A hybrid participant may finish 10 miles of the half-marathon on a course of their choosing, indoors or out, anytime before the 5K start on April 18. The final 3.1 miles are completed at the Maple Run event on Saturday, April 18. Low-Cost Youth Registration Participants aged 8 to 17 on the day of the Maple Run may select a low-cost youth 5K or half-marathon entry. Half-marathon youth participants are not eligible for age-group and overall placement awards All youth registrants will receive a shirt and finisher's medallion included in their entry fee Walk or Run The half-marathon route will remain open for four hours, so speedy walkers and runner/walkers have time to finish. Dedicated walkers are encouraged to try the virtual or hybrid option to test their mettle on the half-marathon course or opt for the in-person 5K. The Maple Run start times for the in-person half marathon and 5K are staggered, so finish times closely coordinate between the two distances. Wheelchair Athletes The in-person half-marathon course is fully on road, with two steeper hills, and open to traffic. Wheelchair athletes, special needs strollers, and certified service animals are welcome on the course. The Maple Run Half-Marathon Course The scenic out-and-back half-marathon course offers well-stocked refreshment stations along the route, staffed by the North Country's best volunteers. 5K Course 5K(ish) participants travel an on- and off-road course through the Village of Canton and the well-maintained trail system of the St. Lawrence University campus. Shirts, Medals, Age-Group Recognition, and Placement Prizes All registrants for all distances will receive a long-sleeve shirt included in the cost of their entry. All in-person and hybrid participants will receive an iconic Maple Run wooden finisher's medallion. The top three placements in each half-marathon age group will receive a special edition Maple Run keychain. Overall 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-place prizes will be awarded to in-person half-marathon participants in men's, women's, and non-binary categories. No placement prizes or age-group awards will be offered to 5K participants. Spectators! Watch runners get a start, take on the course, or cross the finish line. There is plenty of room at the combined start/finish line for spectators. For folk who wish to grace their athlete with the finisher's medal, arrangements can be made with the volunteers at the finish line. The half-marathon route is open to traffic, making it easy to reach the halfway point and water stations. Spectators are encouraged to bring signs, ring cow bells, and take pictures! The Ogdensburg History Museum is excited to announce a new series of "Genealogy for Beginners" workshops led by veteran genealogist and fan-favorite presenter, Dale Sheldon. These hands-on sessions are designed to help residents navigate the rewarding journey of tracing their family history. Beginning this spring, Sheldon will guide participants through the essential steps of building a family tree, from mastering census records to breaking through "brick walls" in their research. Workshop Schedule (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM): April 18 May 16 June 13 July 11 August 8 September 12 What to Expect: Participants will gain practical skills in several key areas, including: Starting your family tree and establishing best practices. Understanding census records and common historical sources. Utilizing free online tools and resources. Specialized Assistance: Finding documentation for Canadian citizenship certificates. To get the most out of these sessions, the use of a computer is highly recommended, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own laptops. Jazz Concert  The Institute for Learning Centered Education (ILCE), an autism advocacy organization, is partnering with the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce to present its Second Annual Jazz Benefit Concert. The benefit concert will feature the popular local quintet, The Five Dots, who play jazz standards, original compositions, and unique takes on R&B and popular songs. The lineup includes Hailey Hodge (vocals), John Danis (electric wind instrument and vocals), the Rev. James Galasinski (bass), Ben Richey (drums), and Tim Savage (piano). The fundraising event will help the institute to continue to provide vital services and public resources to support individuals on the autism spectrum.

10th Annual Earth Day 7K Trail Run/Walk Nature Up North is excited to invite you to join them for the 10th Annual Earth Day 7K Trail Run & Walk. One of the few annual trail races in the North Country, this race's proceeds benefit local conservation and environmental education initiatives. Walkers can start at 10:00 am, with runners starting at 10:30 am at the Wachtmeister Field Station. Runners' times will be recorded and available after the event. The flat, 7-kilometer (approximately 4.4 miles) course connects the Kip and Saddlemire Trails at St. Lawrence University, passing through scenic forests and wetlands along the Little River. The flat terrain makes this course suitable for runners and walkers of all fitness levels. The course will be well-marked, with volunteers at all major intersections. Short road segments connect the longer stretches of trail. Be prepared for a few muddy sections! Join us after the race for awards, a prize raffle, and refreshments! In the past, we’ve had t-shirts as well, but to keep with the spirit of Earth Day, we decided to limit the potential for waste this year. Instead, try to create your own “Earth Day Ensemble” of clothing for the race to show off your unique style! The race fee is $25 for general admittance and $15 for students. Youth 12 and under are free. All proceeds for this event will benefit local conservation and environmental education projects in the North Country. To register, follow this link!
